Derby Closed 2017 Table Tennis Tournament (Report by Aubrey Henry)
(a spreadsheet containing details for all events can be downloaded ====> Results )
This was played at the Draycott TT Centre on Sunday 8th January 2017. This is the fifth year where we have run the tournament early January and the number of entries would suggest that this is still a popular choice amongst the competitors.
The entry at 51 (55 entered and 4 dropped out) was up on last year. Mike Starkie, John Cowell and myself ran the event (with John also playing in a few events). Another committee member, George Taylor, took the lead in updating the results on the notice board.
The main event, ‘Open Singles’, played in 16 groups of 3, with each group containing a seeded player. All 16 seeds won their respective groups, going thru to the knockout stage. In the first round of the knockout, the top 8 seeds won their match. Craig Feargrieve (number 1 seed) progressed thru the knockout to the final, beating Nick Heaps, Colin Ambrose, and Jane Vickers (in the semi-final). In the other half of the draw Wayne Glossop (the number 3 seed) beat Robin Pearce (number 2 seed) in the semi-final. Craig Feargrieve and Wayne Glossop (both play for Sawley 1) fought out a close final, with Craig taking the title with a 11-7 win in the fifth. Wayne gained some compensation by going on to beat Simon Hall (3-0) in the Over 40s final.
In the ‘drawn’ Doubles, Wayne Glossop and Andy Coupe beat Steve Porter and Steve Cooper 3-1.
The ‘Handicap Singles’ was the most popular event, with nearly all competitors opting to enter. Daniel Allen (Burton Uxbridge) beat Terry Cotterill (Waingroves) 3-0 in the final (to take his second event on the day).
The entries for the ‘Juniors’ and ‘Ladies’ was very low, so these were played in group matches. Daniel Allen coming out on top in the Juniors. Theresa Richardson and Jane Vickers (who won their groups) contested the Ladies final, Theresa winning in 3-1.
Colin Ambrose (Draycott) retained his (the Over 60s) title for the fourth time, beating Mal Truman (Sawley) 3-1 in the final.
In the Division 1 final Matt Satchwell (Marstons) beat Kalpesh Bhatt (Jacksdale) coming from 2-1 down to win 11-4 in the fifth. Paul Chadwick (Draycott) beat Jonathan Wood (Melbourne) 3-0 in the Division 2 final. The Division 3 final was played out by Helena Dicken (the youngest player) and Brian Canavan (the oldest player), Helena winning 3-0. The Division 4 final was closest of the day, Tom Wright (Draycott) coming from 2-0 down to beat Nathan Dumelow (Melbourne) 11-9 in the fifth.
I'd like to thank Brian Savage, Graham Gobey and Paul Chadwick for their 'centre support' and all the teas and toasties. Mike Starkie, John Cowell and George Taylor for giving a large part of their day to administer the event. Last, but not least, all the players that entered because we wouldn’t have a tournament without you.
In total, 11 events were contested, with a total of 212 matches played on the day. By the time we played the ‘finals’ most of the players had already gone home. Are we trying to do too much in one day? Should we re-visit holding a 'Finals night’?
