Senior League Week 19

Division 1

Lions B were crowned 1st Division champions this week with 2 matches to spare, the decisive points coming during a hard fought 6-4 win over Lions C. The team that consists of Phil Ogier and Paul Hainsworth have utilised the services of reserves Matt Stubbington and Martin Sarre throughout the season due to the absence of Carmen Aniceto due to injury and both players have picked up important wins. Ogier has led the way for the champions by winning over 80% of his singles matches and Hainsworth has also had a good season winning around 70% of his singles matches thus far. The pair have also performed well in the doubles matches and have lost just 4 of the 14 matches contested. Ogier was again the catalyst for victory during their win over Lions C this week as he picked up 3 important singles wins. His opening wins came against Alex Robinson and reserve Luke Bichard in straight games, however it was his final win which was the most critical. He was on the table against Joshua Butler with the scores delicately poised at 4-4 and a win in this match would seal the title for his side, that only required a single point to confirm the title. The 18 year old had other ideas and stormed into a 2-1 lead, giving Ogier plenty to think about. This did not deter him though and he showed great resolve to come through the remaining games via matching scores of 11-7 to seal the title. The final match of the evening was between Hainsworth and Robinson, which was a replica of the last match contested between the 2 sides, with the champions leading 5-4 at the time and all to play for. On the previous occasion, Lions B had incredibly reversed a 4-1 deficit to win 6-4, culminating in Hainsworth's straight game win over Robinson. This time the champions had only trailed 4-3, but the outcome of the match between Hainsworth and Robinson remained the same, with Hainsworth holding his nerve and powering through in 4 games. Earlier on in the encounter, Sarre won an important match over Bichard in straight games. The doubles encounter was also a high quality affair and it saw Robinson and Butler overturn a 2-0 deficit to take it in 5 games over Ogier and Hainsworth, their 3rd 5 set doubles win over the pair this season.

Whistlers A moved to within a single point of the Lions C side after they completed a 10-0 brush over their B side this week. Joshua Stacey, Lawrence Stacey and Dawn Morgan were on hand to pick up singles wins over Mark Pipet, Phil Hunkin and reserve Joseph Bourgaize. Hunkin came closest to picking up a win as he went down in 5 games to Lawrence, the final 2 ends both lost 13-11. Pipet also came close during his match with Morgan, however his 2-1 lead was clawed back by Morgan, who won the decider 11-6. Morgan teamed with Lawrence as they beat Pipet and Hunkin 3-0 in the doubles encounter.

Division 2

With Whistlers D having already sealed the 2nd Division title, the intriguing situation from the final week of Division 2 matches was who would clinch the runners-up spot. Whistlers C were in the driving seat and knew that a win would guarantee them the position and they did just that. They ended up 7-3 winners over Ravenscroft Panthers B in a match where Kay Chivers defeated Peter Vivian, Shaun Mosley and Steve Martin. Despite the defeat, Martin gave Chivers a real scare in the opening match of the evening as he narrowly went down 12-10 in the 5th and deciding game, having earlier led 2-1. Keith Opie picked up wins over Martin and Mosley and alongside Chivers, won the doubles clash over Vivian and Mosley in 4 games. Stuart Sarre was also on hand to add to the tally courtesy of a 4 game win over Martin.

Division 3

With Division 1 being sealed this week, the 3rd Division is the only league yet to be decided, with Lions G and Lions H both able to take the title. Lions H moved to within 3 points of the league leaders after their 2nd consecutive 10-0 whitewash of the season, Lions I the unfortunate recipients. Theo Lepp, Peter Powell and Lynn Finn all defeated Jan Priest, Bolette Hjorth and reserve Rose Powell. Lepp and Powell cruised through the doubles fixture against Priest and Hjorth in straight games.
