Senior League 2017-18 Week 12

Division 1

Lions A and Whistlers A continue to match each others results and remain locked together at the top of the 1st Division from the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues. They will meet this week in a top of the table clash, which also happens to be the final fixture before the Christmas and New Years break.

Lions A still hold the mathematical advantage on games ratio and they ran out as comfortable 7-3 winners over 3rd placed side Whistlers B this week. Ben Foss continues to improve as the season goes on and he again came away with an unbeaten evening of action. He overcame Joshua Stacey in 4 sets on top of straight sets wins over Matthew Casey and reserve Andy Lihou. He also combined well with Dan Collenette in the doubles fixture where they defeated Stacey and Casey over 4 sets. Paul Hainsworth added a duo of straight set wins over Casey and Lihou, but missed out 11-8 in the deciding end against Stacey. Collenette picked up the remaining Lions victory due to his straight sets win over Lihou, however he was edged 13-11 in the decider by Casey and also went down in straight sets to Stacey.

Whistlers A earned a 7-3 win of their own over 4th placed side Lions B. Garry Dodd continues to dominate the Division 1 averages and picked up his 34th, 35th and 36th consecutive singles wins of the league season courtesy of straight set wins over Ryan Bichard, Andre De Carteret and reserve Jez Powell. Mark Pipet added straight sets wins over Bichard and De Carteret and also teamed with Dodd to secure the doubles over Bichard and De Carteret in straight games. Martin Sarre added the 7th and final rubber on the night courtesy of a solid 5 set win over Bichard. Reserve Jez Powell played well for the defeated side due to straight sets wins over Pipet and Sarre and De Carteret also earned a notable straight game win over Sarre.

The remaining fixture of the season saw the side at the bottom of the table, Lions C, move off the bottom due to a 6-4 win over the now bottom side, Whistlers C. Jamie Ferbrache and 2nd Division reserve Corey Brouard played well on the night and each earned wins over Ryan Gilson and Charlotte Casey. Ian Le Page overcame Casey in 4 sets, however it was the doubles fixture which proved to the decisive encounter. Ferbrache and Le Page edged it 12-10 in the 5th and deciding end over Gilson and Casey. Lawrence Stacey was the man of the match due to his trio of straight sets wins over the Lions players.

Division 2

Whistlers D extended their advantage at the top to 4 points following a narrow 6-4 win over one of their title rivals Lions E. Kay Chivers, Ellis Tomlin and Keith Opie all defeated Corey Brouard and Caden Brouard to make sure of the win. Corey was unlucky to miss out to both Opie and Tomlin over the full 5 set distance. Jez Powell did his best for the defeated side and won all of his singles matches over the Whistlers opposition. He also combined with Corey to beat Chivers and Opie in 4 sets.

Division 3

St Pauls B may remain 6 points clear at the top of the 3rd, however they were given a stern test by Whistlers G this week and only just edged through 6-4. Craig Dunning and John Wills each picked up wins over Callum Gilson and reserve Robert Naftel, whilst Derek Carter picked up a win over Naftel. The team of Carter and Dunning won the crucial doubles encounter over Gilson and Naftel in 4 sets to secure the win. Ben Sharp was unbeaten on the night due to wins over each of the St Pauls contingent. Gilson picked up the other win for the Whistlers side when he overcame Carter in 4 sets.
