Senior League 2017-18 Week 19

Division 1

Lions A maintained their 2 point advantage from Whistlers A at the top of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues this week.

The leaders went into the half term break strongly courtesy of a 9-1 win over the side residing at the foot of the table, Lions C. Ben Foss and Paul Hainsworth each defeated Andy Gill, Jamie Ferbrache and reserve Jez Powell in singles action, Foss dropping ends against Gill and Ferbrache, with Hainsworth needing the full 5 sets to overcome Powell. Dan Collenette added a 4 set win over Gill and 5 set win over Ferbrache, however he was no match for Powell on the evening, as the Division 2 reserve played some excellent table tennis to win in straight games. Collenette and Hainsworth combined well to take the doubles rubber in straight sets over Gill and Ferbrache.

Whistlers A also ran out winners this week over Whistlers B, 7-3 being the final outcome. Garry Dodd moved one step closer to another unblemished season of singles action as he motored towards a trio of singles wins over Joshua Stacey, Matt Casey and reserve Ian Fitchet, with just the single end being dropped during the 4 set win over Stacey. Mark Pipet added wins over Casey in 4 sets and Fitchet in straight sets, whilst Martin Sarre rounded off the victory with a straight sets win over Fitchet. The margin of victory was further extended when Dodd and Sarre clinched the doubles encounter against Stacey and Casey in straight sets.

Lions B are now 3 points clear of the Whistlers B side in 3rd position after their 7-3 win over Whistlers C. Phil Ogier, Ryan Bichard and Andre De Carteret all defeated Ryan Gilson and Charlotte Casey in singles action to make sure of the win. Bichard and De Carteret also took the doubles encounter over Gilson and Casey in straight sets. Lawrence Stacey performed well for his side despite the defeat as he emerged victorious against all of the Lions players. The best encounter came against Ogier where he battled back from 2-1 down in the tight affair to clinch it 11-9 in the decider.

Division 2

League leaders Whistlers D had no match this week and this enabled the side in second place to reduce the deficit to 5 points, with a game in hand still remaining.

The side in question is Lions E and they were ruthless 9-1 winners over Whistlers F this week. Corey and Caden Brouard each overcame Paula Le Ber and reserves Jayden Tucknott and Josh Crocker in singles action. They also teamed to win the doubles over Tucknott and Crocker in straight sets. Lions own reserve Dave Sherborne made his first appearance of the season and he overcame Tucknott and Crocker, but narrowly went down in 5 sets to Le Ber in the match opener, despite having led 2-0.

Division 3

St Pauls B remain 10 points clear at the top and they cruised towards a 10-0 whitewash over Whistlers I this week. Derek Carter, John Wills and Craig Dunning all beat Len Bretel and Matthew Board in singles action. Carter and Wills also won the doubles encounter over Bretel and Board in straight sets. The St Pauls side gained the remaining 3 rubbers via walkover.

Division 4

Lions L extended their lead at the top to 6 points, however Lions K do have 2 games in hand on the league leaders. The L side were 8-2 winners over Whistlers M this week in an encounter where Rose Powell and Jan Priest each overcame Sammy Tostevin, Sabato Folmi and Matt Hale in singles action. Evan Lesbirel added a win over Hale and also teamed with Priest to defeat Tostevin and Hale over 4 sets in the doubles match
