Senior League 2019-20 Week 10

Division 1

The expected results were achieved this week in the top flight of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues as wins were obtained by the leading 3 sides.

Defending champions Whistlers A held onto their slender single point advantage after battling to a 6-4 win over 5th placed side Lions B. The leaders are missing Matthew Casey for a few weeks and they narrowly avoided dropping points this week due to a crucial win for their 2nd Division reserve Ben Sharp. Sharp stepped up well as he battled to a crucial surprise 5 set win over Dan Collenette in his first match, 12-10 the score in the final end. Lawrence Stacey and Ryan Gilson each defeated Collenette and De Carteret in singles action and the duo combined well in the doubles where they overcame Collenette and De Carteret in straight sets. Despite the defeat, Phil Ogier had an excellent evening due to his trio of singles wins. This included a 4 set win over Stacey, only his 3rd loss of the season thus far. De Carteret also performed well during his 4 set win over Sharp.

Whistlers B continue to chase the leaders and they emphatically beat bottom placed side Lions D 9-1 this week. The Lions side were missing their best player Liam Robilliard and both Joshua Stacey and Ellis Tomlin picked up singles wins over Sam Clark, Corey Brouard and reserve Andy Ferbrache. They also won the doubles over Brouard and Clark in 4 sets. Mark Pipet added wins over Ferbrache and Brouard, however he was beaten in 5 sets by Clark in the final match of the night.

Lions A earned themselves a comfortable 7-3 win over 4th placed side Lions C this week. Ben Foss was unbeaten in singles action for his side with wins over Paul Hainsworth, Charlotte Casey and reserve Ian Le Page. His clash against Hainsworth was hard fought and he needed to battle back from 9-8 down in the deciding 5th end before coming through 11-9. Ryan Bichard and Jamie Ferbrache each added wins over Casey and Le Page. Ferbrache beat both in 4 sets, whilst Bichard had a tough match with Casey in which he needed to come back from 2-1 down to win in 5 sets. The doubles rubber was surprisingly won by Hainsworth and Casey in straight sets over the recent GTTA Open Doubles champions Foss and Bichard, whilst Hainsworth added further singles wins over Bichard and Ferbrache for his side.

Division 2

Lions F continue to lead the way at the top of the Division, however they were tested this week by Whistlers D and only squeezed through 6-4. Jez Powell was in good form for his side due to straight sets singles wins over Martin Sarre, Craig Dunning and Paula Le Ber. Andy Ferbrache picked up wins over Le Ber and Dunning and the duo combined well to win the vital doubles match over Sarre and Dunning in straight sets.

Division 3

Lions H are now 3 points clear at the top of the table after their 6-4 win over Whistlers F. Brian Ferbrache and Jonah Ingrouille each defeated Hedley Watson and Andy Le Page, whilst they also won the doubles match over Le Page and Shane Cotter in straight sets. Sue Ferbrache picked up the 6th win for the Lions side due to her straight sets win over Le Page.

Division 4

Whistlers G remain perfect and won their 9th consecutive match of the season this week. The win in question ensured that they remain 4 points clear at the top and it was their second 10-0 whitewash of the season, Lions M the side on the wrong end of the result. Stuart Sarre, Darren Sarre and Matthew Board all beat Rose Powell, Karen Blondel and reserve Debra Smith in singles action. The doubles encounter was won by Board and Darren against Powell and Blondel in straight sets.
