Senior League 2019-20 Week 6

Division 2

The absence of action in the top flight of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues this week saw the second Division take centre stage.

There was a massive top of the table clash between the 2 teams who challenged for the title last year - defending champions Lions E and the runners-up from last year, Whistlers C. The Whistlers side has been in utterly dominant form reecently and had won 4 consecutive matches 10-0 prior to this encounter, however they surprisingly fell to a shock 10-0 defeat to an inspired performance from the Lions side.

The Whistlers side were without their leading player Kay Chivers, however Steve Ozanne, Tim Le Page and Carl Le Tissier played superbly and each defeated Ben Sharp, Keith Opie and reserve Derek Webb in singles action. Despite the nature of the victory, 4 of the 10 matches were won over the full 5 set distance. It was a familiar story in 3 of the matches as Sharp, Opie and Webb all led Le Page 2-1 before succumbing in 5 sets. Sharp also led Ozanne 2-1 before falling over the distance. The doubles rubber was one of the few matches settled in straight sets on the night and it was Ozanne and Le Page who defeated Sharp and Opie in this encounter.

The outcome of the above result sees the Lions side with a single point advantage at the top.

Just 1 point further back is Lions F who overcame St Pauls A 8-2 this week. Jez Powell and 3rd Division reserve Edward Rowe each won all of their singles matches against Maurice James, Trevor Bourgaize and reserve Val Guilbert. The other Lions reserve Terry Trustum added a further win over Guilbert, but lost out to both James and Bourgaize. The doubles was won by Powell and Trustum over James and Bourgaize in straight sets.

Division 3

The only other Division to see action was the third Division and it saw league leaders Lions H win again against Whistlers E 6-4. The win gives them a 2 point lead at the top and it was reserve Steve Potter who put in a man of the match performance. Potter defeated reserves Ken Falla and Ian Fitchet, as well as normal team member Callum Gilson. Brian Ferbrache picked up wins against Fitchet and Gilson and the pair combined strongly to beat Fitchet and Gilson in straight sets in the doubles rubber.
