Senior League 2020-21 Week 6

Division 2

With no action taking place in the top flight of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues this week, the Second Division took centre stage.

The fixtures were such that there was an important clash between 2 of the leading title challengers in the Division and the encounter itself was filled with surprise results.

Whistlers D, who had won all 6 of their first league matches came up against Lions E, who had lost just once in their first 6. After all of the twists and turns, it ended as a 5-5 stalemate, culminating in a shock 4 set win for Paula Le Ber over Jez Powell, resulting in Powell's 100% singles record being removed. Powell had earlier battled past Martin Sarre in 5 sets in the match opener before overcoming Craig Dunning in straight sets, whilst he also combined well with Caden Brouard to win the doubles clash against Sarre and Dunning in 5 sets. Brouard also had an excellent night which saw a strong 4 set win over Le Ber followed shortly by a pivotal 5 set win over Sarre in the penultimate game of the match, despite trailing 2-1. The junior came so close to completing an unbeaten evening, but narrowly lost out to Dunning in 5 sets. All of the Whistlers players picked up wins over James Crocker to make sure of the point and the retention of their unbeaten start to the campaign.

That result leaves the Whistlers side top of the table and 2 points clear of their rivals, but it opened the door for Whistlers C who are now just a single point behind. The C side had a tough clash of their own, but they edged past Lions F 6-4. Kay Chivers put in some good performances to defeat Luke Le Tissier, Andy Ferbrache and Brian Ferbrache. Keith Opie added wins over Brian and Andy and it was reserve Ken Falla who edged the Whistlers side over the line courtesy of a 4 set win over Brian in the penultimate game of the night. For the Lions side, Le Tissier beat Opie in 5 sets and Falla in straight sets, whilst Andy beat Falla in 5 sets. Le Tissier and Brian did very well to beat Chivers and Opie in straight sets in the doubles rubber.

Division 3

Ravenscroft Panthers D remain 1 point clear at the top after their 7-3 win over Whistlers G. Shaun Mosley and Steve Martin each defeated Ken Falla, Erik Teteruck and Max Burrows in singles action. Mark Windsor added a further win over Burrows in 4 sets to extend the margin of victory, however he was beaten by Falla and Teteruck in singles action. The defeated Whistlers side combination of Falla and Teteruck battled to a 4 set doubles win over Mosley and Windsor.
