Senior League 2020-21 Week 7

Division 1

The commencement of the second rotation of matches in the top flight of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues saw expected wins from the leading 3 sides.

Lions A remain top of the league by a single point after their 7-3 win over 4th placed side Whistlers B. Ben Foss and Ryan Bichard each went unbeaten on the night as each defeated Ellis Tomlin, Ben Sharp and 2nd Division reserve Martin Sarre in singles action. Tomlin came the closest in these encounters as he narrowly went down to Bichard in 5 sets. Foss and Bichard also won the doubles encounter against Tomlin and Sharp in straight sets. Each of the Whistlers players all defeated the Lions reserve Luke Bichard in singles action. This was however far from straightforward as both Tomlin and Sharp needed the full 5 sets to get over the line.

Whistlers A remain in second position after their comfortable 9-1 win over Lions D. Lawrence Stacey and Matthew Casey each went unbeaten with singles wins over Liam Robilliard, Steve Ozanne and Charlotte Casey, whilst Ryan Gilson added wins over Ozanne and Casey. Stacey's clash with Ozanne was hard fought though and he needed to battle back from 2-1 down to come through 11-9 in the deciding end. Gilson and Casey won the doubles over Ozanne and Casey in straight sets. Robilliard prevented the whitewash due to his 4 set win over Gilson in the opening match of the night.

Lions B are 2 points back in third after their tough 6-4 victory over Lions C. Phil Ogier and Dawn Morgan made sure of the victory due to them each earning singles wins over Paul Hainsworth, Andy Gill and Sam Clark. Morgan and Ogier both however needed 5 sets to overcome Hainsworth, with Ogier coming back from 2-0 down and saving match points in the 4th and 5th ends before edging each of them 12-10. All of the defeated C side picked up singles wins over Andre De Carteret, whilst Hainsworth and Gill defeated Morgan and De Carteret in straight sets in the doubles clash.

Division 2

Whistlers D are still 2 points clear at the top following their comfortable 8-2 win against Lions G. Martin Sarre was the leading performer due to his 4 set singles wins over Nye Matthew and Jonah Ingrouille and his 5 set win over Ian Le Page. Craig Dunning and Paula Le Ber added wins over Ingrouille and Le Page, but both lost to Matthew. Sarre and Dunning won the doubles rubber against Le Page and Ingrouille in 4 sets.

In other Division 2 news, Ben Foote earned an excellent straight sets win over averages leader Jez Powell. Despite this win, his Ravenscroft Panthers A side still succumbed 9-1 to the Lions E side who are currently joint 2nd. Juniors Caden Brouard and James Crocker impressed in the encounter due to each of them winning against Foote, Peter Vivian and reserve Mick Ingrouille, whilst Powell added wins over Ingrouille and Vivian. Brouard and Crocker won the doubles over Foote and Vivian in straight sets.

Division 3

Ravenscroft Panthers D still maintain their slender single point advantage at the top after they romped to a 9-1 win over St Pauls B. Steve Martin and Shaun Mosley each defeated Rob Vile, Derek Carter and John Wills in singles matches, whilst Mark Windsor added further wins against Carter and Wills, whilst narrowly being edged out in 5 sets by Vile. Martin and Mosley combined well to defeat Vile and Wills in straight sets in the doubles.

Division 4

Lions J are 2 points clear at the top and made it 6 consecutive wins when they beat Lions K 8-2 this week. Graham Mallett and Derek Cave each beat Val Guilbert, Diane Le Page and reserve Connor Powell in singles action. Lionel Jones added a 4 set win over Le Page, but was beaten in 4 sets by Powell and in 5 sets by Guilbert. Mallett and Cave won the doubles by virtue of their straight sets win over Guilbert and Le Page.
