SENIOR LEAGUE 2020-21 WEEK 20

The final 2 Divisions of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues culminated during the penultimate week of fixtures.

Last week had seen the double title success for the Lions table tennis club, but this week saw equivalent success for Whistlers table tennis club as their D clinched the 2nd Division crown and their F side finally navigated victory in the tightly contested 3rd Division.

Division 2

The Whistlers side clinched the title due to a crushing 9-1 victory over Ravenscroft Panthers A. Martin Sarre and Paula Le Ber each defeated Ben Foote, Peter Vivian and reserve Brandon Ferbrache in singles action. Craig Dunning added wins over Vivian and Ferbrache, however he was edged in 5 sets by Foote meaning all 3 of their matches this season have gone the distance, with Foote winning the last 2. The doubles was won by Sarre and Dunning over Vivian and Ferbrache in straight sets.

They are champions now by virtue of having a superior games difference ratio to their final opponents and this season's runners-up Lions E, who are 2 points adrift.

The Lions side already had the runners-up spot sealed but they also ran out winners this week, 6-4 over St Pauls A. Jez Powell is leading the averages heading into the final week and he earned a trio of straight sets singles wins over Chas Elliott, Maurice James and Trevor Bourgaize. Caden Brouard defeated James and Bourgaize in straight sets, whilst James Crocker picked up the final win courtesy of a battling 5 set win over Bourgaize.

Division 3

Whistlers F's success came courtesy of a tight 6-4 victory over Ravenscroft Panthers D, who had been leading the Division for a large part of the season. The defeat has seen the Panthers side slip into 3rd spot, a point behind Whistlers G.

Stuart Sarre is the averages leader and has lost just 5 of his 60 singles matches this season. He was pivotal once more in this fixture as he defeated Shaun Mosley, Steve Martin and Mark Windsor, dropping sets only to Mosley and Martin during 4 set wins. Darren Sarre earned a nice straight sets win over Windsor, whilst Board beat the same player in 4 sets to put his side on the brink. The doubles rubber proved to be pivotal and it was the Whistlers combination of Stuart and Board who took it over Martin and Windsor in 4 sets.

This result ensures that there is a crunch match in the final week as the Panthers side compete against now 2nd placed side Whistlers G, who are ahead by a single point. There is all to play for and the Whistlers side must avoid defeat to ensure a 1-2 finish for Whistlers.
