SENIOR LEAGUE 2022-23 WEEK 4

Things continue to be delicately poised in the top-flight of the Doric Insurance sponsored senior leagues, with just a single point separating the top 5 sides.

Division 1

That single point however is the difference which separates Lions A from the chasing pack following their narrow 6-4 win over Lions E this week. Phil Ogier remains unbeaten in singles action as he defeated Ryan Bichard, Steve Ozanne and reserve Nye Matthew. He beat Matthew in straight sets, Ozanne in 4 sets and Bichard over the full 5 sets. In the latter he needed to battle back from 2-1 down to come through victorious. Jez Powell added wins over Ozanne in 4 sets and Matthew in straight sets, whilst it was the usual combination of Ogier and Powell that won the important doubles match over Bichard and Ozanne in straight sets. For the defeated E side, all players picked up wins over the Lions A reserve Connor Powell, whilst Bichard earned an impressive straight sets win over Jez Powell in the match opener.

Lions C are next in the table on games ratio after they delivered a whitewash on bottom of the table side Lions D. Joshua Butler, Liam Robilliard and Matthew Stubbington all defeated reserve Scott Romeril, Andy Gill and Charlotte Casey in singles action. Despite the one-sided nature of the scoreline, there were a number of close matches including Robilliard's 5 set win over Romeril and Stubbington's 5 set win over Gill.

Whistlers B and Lions B are the next sides in the table and they played out a 5-5 draw this week. Ben Foss was the leading player in the fixture for the Lions outfit as he led his side with an unbeaten evening of singles action. He overcame Josh Stacey in 5 sets, Matthew Casey in straight sets and reserve Shelby Timms in straight sets. Jamie Ferbrache picked up a 4 set win over Timms and Lions reserve Jonah Ingrouille also earned himself a tidy 4 set win over Timms. For the Whistlers side, Stacey and Casey each beat Ferbrache and Ingrouille and they also teamed to win the crucial doubles rubber against Foss and Ferbrache in 4 sets.

Whistlers C are the final side level on 5 points with the 3 x sides above them and they earned a comfortable 8-2 win over Whistlers A this week. Alice Edwards continued her unbeaten return to action and this included her ending Lawrence Stacey's 100% start to the season in 4 sets. She also beat Ryan Gilson in 4 sets and Ben Sharp in straight sets. Dawn Morgan and Mark Pipet each added 5 set wins over Sharp and wins over Gilson in straight and 4 sets respectively to secure the win. Edwards also teamed with Morgan to beat Gilson and Sharp in 5 sets in the doubles match.

Division 2

Lions F maintained their perfect start to the season with their 4th consecutive win. It was a tight affair against Lions G which ended 6-4. Caden Brouard is joint top of the averages and he showed his quality in this fixture with three strong wins. He beat Jonah Ingrouille in a tough 5 set opener before dispatching Andy and Brian Ferbrache in straight sets. Nye Matthew added wins over Andy in 4 sets and Brian in straight sets, however he lost his 100% singles record to an inspired Ingrouille. Brouard and Matthew won the all important doubles match in straight sets over Ingrouille and Brian to secure the points. All of the G side beat reserve Helen Barker in singles action.

Division 3

Lions D have moved ahead of Ravenscroft Panthers D on games ratio after the previously unveaten Panthers side slipped up.

The Lions side were in good form and won 8-2 against Whistlers F. Steve Potter and Cameron Powell each went unbeaten, with each winning against Matthew Board, Darren Sarre and reserve Jamie Loveridge. Jenny Powell added a 5 set win over Sarre, whilst she also teamed with Potter to win the doubles against Board and Sarre in 4 sets.

The Panthers side had looked impressive so far this season but were severely weakened due to the absence of averages leader Becks O'Keefe and Juliette Yeaman. It enabled a shock 10-0 whitewash result in favour Ravenscroft Panthers C. Pierre Jehan, Mick Ingrouille and Mark Windsor made no mistake in beating Vikki Stacey and reserves Richard Wellfair and Hollie Jenkins across all 10 matches.

Division 4

There are now just 3 sides who remain with a 100% winning record at the top and they are Lions L, O and N.
The L side lead the way on games ratio and were ruthless 10-0 winners over Whistlers H this week. Alex Paul, Diane Le Page and reserve Katey Collenette all beat Sabato Folmi, Shaun Evans and Matt Hale in singles action before Le Page and Collenette won the doubles against Folmi and Evans in straight sets.
