Woodward Cup 2024

The Hastings & District Table Tennis Association’s individual handicap competition, the Woodward Handicap Cup, took place last week at the Hollington and Tackleway Table Tennis Clubs.

From the session at Tackleway James Harrison from Tackleway TTC and Dave Turnbull from Hollington TTC, both Division 3 players, plus Matt Haynes from Bexhillians TTC, the top player in Division 1, won through to the finals.  

At the Hollington session five players won through to the finals: John Ellis and Andy Hyde from Bexhillians TTC, both Division 1 players, Graham Deeprose from Hastings Academy and Ryan Demeza from Hollington TTC, both Division 2 players, and Mike Cruttenden from Tackleway TTC, a Division 3 player.

The final session was held at Hollington TTC on Saturday 23 March.  In the semi-finals Graham Deeprose defeated James Harrison 22-20, 21-17, having given a 12 point start in each game.  Then Matt Haynes beat Ryan Demeza 
21-16, 21-18, after Ryan received 14 points.

The final saw Graham receive a 12 point start but Matt triumphed by 21-17, 21-17 to win this competition at his first attempt.  In contrast Graham was playing in his second Woodward Handicap final as in 2004 he lost to Yolanda King.
