News - Week 16

This a delayed report due to Craig-y-don fielding two cup-tied players in the wrong teams. Sadly, having won both games narrowly against the Police, it was decided by the committee that Craig-y-don could not count the performances of these two players. In more positive news for the club, junior Tom Bird clearly proved he is a first division player beating both Roger Lee and James Wan and only losing out narrowly to Brian Cook.

The other games in the Handicap Cup quarter finals were clear cut. Trinity B overcame a 70-point deficit to beat Y Morfa B by 27 points. Both Elliott Goddard and Roy Williams won their singles matches and the sole Y Morfa B win witnessed Steve Davies beating Rob Stewart 40-32, but this was not enough. Second division Rhyl B beat first division Trinity A by 71-points. Fred MooreNorman Stagg and John Hughes all beat Alan Hooper. John Hughes also beat Eddie Chan 40-23 to show that he will hold his own in the first division next season. Another quarter final pitched an all-female Rhyl C team, who foot the second division without a league win, against solid first division Llandudno. The first division outfit had to restrict Rhyl C below an average of 22.5 points in each game. The ladies from Rhyl put up a strong fight with Taylor Tabner achieving 31 against Andy LuntBridget Prescott amassed 26 against Rob WalkerPat Peak hit her target in all three singles matches but Llandudno prevailed by 45-points.

In the Presidents Trophy quarter-final, the Henllan derby created a tense club night, with the A team set to keep the B team below a 33-point average. However, with Paul Hulme restricting his B team opponents to 25 points and Melvyn Booker holding the B team to an average of 27 points, Henllan A asserted their authority on the tie. Melvyn and Jonny Hughes played their best doubles of the season to beat the more experienced Don Grigg/Iain McGillivray combination to 26 points. Jonny Hughes has made great progress playing in the first division this season and cemented this beating both Iain and Chris Watkins. However, Don Grigg is still wily enough to outwit Jonny beating him to 32 and achieving the only win for Henllan B on the night. Henllan A won by 33 points and will meet Rhyl A in the semi-final won progressed when Amlwch A conceded their quarter final. Y Morfa A had to restrict Amlwch B below a 29 average, this was blown away when Emyr Owen beat two Y Morfa A players, he beat Chris Henderson to 25 and Andy Horton to 33.

Amlwch B ran out 39-point winners.
