News - Week Twenty-Eight

In the Division One League Cup Final, Amlwch A secured the League & Cup double, defeating Rhyl A 5-2 in a hotly contested final held ay Craig y Don Community Centre in front of a good crowd. The contest abounded  with some very close, long rallying games. The match of the night was a game you are unlikely to see very often.  Ian Ault representing Amlwch A was playing Dave DanielsRhyl A and with the encounter level at two all, Ian set off in the fifth game decider with some great attacking play. He won ten straight points and the battle looked over; but Dave had other ideas. He took over the attack & incredibly levelled at ten all. However, Ian held his nerve to eventually win 14-12. Well-done to both teams for putting on a great display of table tennis.

 In the Handicap Cup final, Llandudno were set the task of restricting Trinity C to below an average of twenty-eight points per game. Llandudno achieved this in eight encounters with Andy Lunt dropping only sixty-three points in his three singles games. Andy Hughes went down 31-40 to Graham Heath and Ellis Hughes lost 30-40 to Steve Nicholls but it was not enough, Llandudno land the Handicap Cup by thirty-eight points, 500-462.

In the Division One League Cup Final, Craig-y-Don A, secured a league and cup double beating Trinity C 8-1. Ady Waugh was ‘man of the final’ dropping just one game to Andy Hughes. Ross Lander also won his singles he also dropped a game to Andy and scrapped home 15-13 in a fifth game decider against Ellis Hughes in the closest game of the final. The sole TrinIty C victory was provided by Ellis who beat Dave Foster in three straight games.

In the second division, sixth placed Rhyl C beat ninth placed Craig-y-Don B 26-11. Steve Lowe cemented a top three finish in the individual standings with a maximum here. Taylor Tabner also won all three singles but had to fight hard to beat both Telor Jones and Drave Strange over five games. Ged Haresnape recorded a Craig-y-Don B victory beating Marcus Wilton-Jones 11-8 in another five-game thriller.The other Craig-y-don B victory was provided by Telor Jones who also beat Marcus.

This represents the last fixture in the second division,  Craig-y-Don A is crowned as champions and Police B as runners-up. The individual honours went to Ross Lander who won 95.8% of his matches. His title winning teammates Dave Foster and Ady Waugh were placed second and fourth respectively. They were split by third placed Steve Lowe representing Rhyl C. The remainder of the top ten in order were Peter Roberts, Stan Wan, Charlie Hadcock, Ellis Hughes, David Meadows, and Ged Haresnape.
