Jim Bradford Trophy Final 2024

Sturdee 2 were the victors in a very closely fought final this year at Blue Bell Hill Village Hall on Monday, 15th April 2024.

Early exchanges in the first two matches suggested that Upnor might win this final fairly easily as Shane Jarrett disposed of Peter Stokes 21-10, 21-8 and put Upnor into a 14-point lead. Peter Worthington then defeated Dave Bonner 21-13, 21-16 and Upnor were already 19 pts clear. Andrew Marchant stepped up in match 3 and was very impressive for Sturdee as he won the first leg 21-11 before Nick Boden clawed some points back winning 21-13 this retrieved the deficit to 10 points for Sturdee and meant Upnor had their lead cut to 11 pts.

In game 4 Peter Worthington took a further 13 pts off Peter Stokes and at that point it seemed Upnor had the upper hand. Dave Bonner and Andrew Marchant had other ideas and proceeded to give Sturdee real hope as when Peter Stokes went to the table to take on Nick Boden in game 9, Sturdee were leading by two points! Peter played well to restrict Nick to a three-point margin which resulted in Shane Jarrett and Dave Bonner starting the final game with Upnor leading by one point.

A tremendous effort by Dave Bonner 16-21, 21-15 gave him a 45-26 victory over Shane Jarrett meaning Sturdee 2 followed their clubmates Sturdee 1 (last years winners) by winning the Jim Bradford Consolation Trophy.

The player of the match has to be shared by David Bonner (Sturdee) and Peter Worthington (Upnor) as both gained 23 pts on the night.

Our sincere thanks are extended to Gareth Fox for all his organisation of this event and also to John Clarke for umpiring all the matches on the night.
