Congratulations to Brixham Sharks who got the necessary points against Dawlish Aces to clinch the First Division Title. The Sharks team of Adam Shipway, Jazmin Johns, Chris Dunn and the outstanding Stamatis Kioufis gave the Brixham Table Tennis Club the First Division crown for the first time.
Stam Kioufis won the First Division averages for the third season in a row and remains undefeated in the South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League.
Although the Sharks were beaten twice by 2nd placed Torbay Table Tennis Academy, their all round strength won them more sets and therefore more points than the Academy side, and they took the title by just 2 points.
Having postponed their last two matches, due to player unavailability, the Sharks knew exactly what was required to take the title, requiring 15 points, against the Battlers & the Dawlish Aces. Their 10-0 demolition of the Battlers meant a draw in their last match would be enough, job done, or was it? The Aces from Dawlish were not going to lie down and fielded a strong side for their visit to Brixham. The addition of Yannick & Giles Tushingham to the Dawlish squad undoubtably saved the Aces from relegation, who at the half way stage were rooted to the foot of the table. The Tushinghams were joined for this final encounter by Ed Crawford, who's somewhat erratic style could have upset the prospective champions.
All was going to plan for the Sharks as Stam comfortably beat Yannick in the first game followed by Adam beating Ed. But when Giles beat Jazmin followed by Yannicks defeat of Adam and the score at 2-2, could there be a shock on the cards? No-one was going to beat Stam but where was the other point coming from? In the end it was fairly comfortable with Adam coming from behind against Giles to take the all important 5th set for the Sharks and claim the first division crown for the first time in Brixham Table Tennis Club's history
