The first round of the Singles Super League meant very few fixtures this week. The two teams new to the top flight battled out an exciting match at Teign School. NA Buzzards came through against a fighting Torbay Table Tennis Academy II team. Newcomer to the South Devon League Mike Kiff never looked in any trouble winning his 3 singles for the Buzzards and then teamed up with Connor Adams to clinch the final doubles 11-5 in the 5th set to take the match 6-4.
In the 3rd Division the two matches played were between the Dawlish & Brixham clubs, and ended with a win each. Dawlish Diamonds opened up a lead at the top of the Division with a convincing 8-2 win at Brixham over the Panthers. David Davies and Martin Charlesworth returned maximums for the Dawlish side. Brixham Diamonds, with players all new to the league, kicked off their season with a narrow 6-4 victory over Dawlish Drifters. Keith Williams with a maximum, well supported by Nigel Wilson saw the Brixham side home.
Clive Banham was in fine form in the first round of the Single Super League winning all his sets in the top Division, 3 straight. Chris Short also impressed, beating all but Banham to claim 2nd spot.
Adam Shipway, as expected, topped Division 2, but was pushed all the way by Geoff Read, Jazmin Johns & Chris Dunn, who all went to 5 sets with him. Jazmin Johns took the runners-up spot.
Jim McIvor came out top of the 3rd Division using his experience and guile over the youngsters in his group. Fast improving Ben Deakin also impressed, only losing to McIvor to finish 2nd in the group.
Rod Sugden cruised through Division 4, with Pat Darch finishing as the runner-up.
Players are reminded that the closing date for entries to the Early Season Tournament (Torbay Leisure Centre on Sunday 16th November) is Thursday 13th Nov.
