Press Report 27th Mar 2016

SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE.

As we enter the last 4 weeks of the season there are clear favourites for all 4 Divisions but nothing settled yet.

Denbury Imports lead the First Division by just 4 points over NA Batmen, but their game in hand should open the gap, Brixham Sharks in 3rd are not out of it, just 4 points behind the Batmen.    Struggling at the bottom 15 points adrift are the Battlers, last year’s Division Two champions.  Torbay Academy’s Kris Piwowar remains invincible, having won all 21 games he has played.

NA Buzzards have a 9-point lead at the top of the Second Division, but in a close division where everybody is capable of beating everyone else, there is plenty of time for the two Brixham sides, Imports and Pirates, to catch the Buzzards. Last season’s Division Three champions, Denbury Tykes, are 8 points from safety at the foot of the table. The Buzzards’ Ed Crawford leads the averages with 85%.

The Third and Fourth Divisions have had clear leaders all season who have commanding leads and are unlikely to be caught.

In the Third Division, Marldon Tykes, with 13 straight wins, have a 19-point lead and a game in hand over 2nd placed N A Hawks. Dawlish Drifters will almost certainly drop to the Fourth Division as they are 21 points adrift at the foot of the table.   Brixham Dolphins’ Nick Shipley heads the averages with 89%.

The Fourth Division has been led by the youngsters of Torbay Academy 6, mostly in their first year of competitive table tennis, who have not lost a game in either the League or the Cup. They currently have an 18-point lead over 2nd placed NA Kestrels, and they have played a game less. The Academy 6’s brothers Herbie & Curtis Sage along with Jakub Piwowar have won all their singles matches.

With just 2 clubs left in the Cups it is up to the Newton Abbot club to try and disrupt Torbay Academy’s dominance of these competitions.

In the Challenge Singles Team Cup Torbay Academy 6 face the winners of NA Eagles and NA Kestrels in the first semi-final, while in the other semi-final Torbay Academy 2 take on NA Buzzards.

The Dyment Double Team Shield semi-finals has NA Owls taking on holders Torbay Academy 1, and the Academy sides 2 & 6 battling it out for a place in the final.

As a reminder to all players the League’s Annual Closed Tournament takes place at the Torbay Leisure Centre on Sunday 24th April; for entry forms and any further information on the South Devon & Torbay Table Tennis League check out the website,  www.tabletennis365.com/southdevonandtorbay
