ALBANY FLORISTS-SPONSORED SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

The final matches in Division One saw Halwell needing 11 points from their last two matches to avoid finishing bottom of the Division.  Brixham Gulls were the team they were hoping to catch, who had already completed their fixtures.  First up for Halwell was a home match against Dawlish Aces, which was never going to be easy with Naomi Jackson and Mark Burridge playing. So it proved, as both Jackson and Burridge were unbeaten, the Aces beating Halwell 7-3.  So Halwell travelled to Torbay Academy 2 needing to win, and win well, to avoid the drop. They found the Academy’s Tom Ricketts and Javier Garcia in fine form, failing to beat either and again going down 7-3 which means Halwell finish 5 points adrift at the foot of the table

Brixham Gulls – Chris Dunn, Mick Mercer & Mark Smith

There is a similar situation in the 2nd Division with two matches to be played next week to determine the fate of fellow villagers Marldon Tykes and Marldon, at the foot of the table.

The Doubles and Singles Team Handicap Cups are reaching their conclusion with a familiar look to the finals. Torbay Academy 1 are again dominating the competitions.  In the Challenge Singles Cup, their 5-0 demolition of Brixham Pirates in the semi-final is a warning to opponents Marldon, who defeated NA Falcons in a much closer affair at Teign School. Marldon, with Helen Glover and Nigel Goodman unbeaten, won through 5-2, but there were no 3- straight games wins, with 5 of the sets going to a deciding fifth game.

Marldon v Falcons – Nigel Goodman, Graham Holmes, George Breyley, Robert Williams, Derek Stratton, Peter Tarjan, Helen Glover

Torbay  Academy 1 had a tougher fight in the Dyment Doubles, with NA Ospreys taking 3 sets from the Division One champions, before going down 5-3.  The other Doubles semi-final, on an adjacent table, was also between Newton Abbot and the Academy, with the NA Eagles taking on the Academy 4 side.  The Eagles’ team of Jim McIvor, Andy and Alan Tyrrell came through 5-1, but had to fight all the way, as 5 of the 6 sets went to the deciding game.

NA Ospreys v Torbay Academy 1 – Sam Hiles, Luke Robins, Rob Ferguson, Dan Barnett, Patrik Cincala, Greg Wojtowicz
