SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE – SPONSORED BY ALBANY FLORISTS

PRESS REPORT – Sunday 18th Nov

It was Cup week with a new format for the Handicap Challenge Cup first round matches. Every point counts rather than individual wins, so it has become a real team effort.  The draw has thrown many teams from the same division against each other, so handicaps have generally been small.

Holders and favourites to retain the Challenge Cup, Torbay Academy 1, started their campaign with a comfortable 55-point win over Marldon: Jakub Piwowar, Lenard Hernandez and Patrik Cincala were rarely troubled by Second Division Marldon.

Torbay Academy 2 also started well with Warren Ngai leading the way, well supported by Esme Suarez and David Crowley as they defeated Brixham Pirates by 16 points in an all-Division Two tie.  It was a similar margin in favour of the Trawlers from Brixham, in another all-Division Two encounter, as they saw off the challenge from the Taverners, Ian Saxby (11-3 & 11-1) and Nick Williamson (11-0) with big game wins early on putting the Trawlers on the front foot.

NA Kestrels turned the form book upside down in an all- Division Three clash as they brushed aside League leaders Torbay Academy 3, winning by 68 points. Derek Stratton, Robert Williams and Peter Tarjan hit their way to victory over the Academy youngsters.

Dawlish Dodgers had an 11-point victory over fellow Division 5 side NA Vultures, Prabhu Kashap doing the most damage with fine wins for the Dodgers.

NA Eagles’ team of Andy Tyrrell, Curtis Sage and Louis Wilshire had a 40-point victory over clubmates the Hawks.

The most exciting tie of the round was NA Kites against Torbay Academy 5. With 2 sets to play, the Academy side had an 18-point lead. Kites skipper Lewis Short, with a fine display of power hitting, got his team 3 points in front and Josh Redfern held his nerve to win the final set by 9 points and win the match by 12.

Torbay Academy 4, with David Rowsell leading the way, had the biggest win of the day, a 73-point victory over Marldon Tykes.

Just 3 matches took place in the League this week, but they were significant games. Newton Abbot Buzzards hit the top of the First Division with a 6-4 victory over clubmates the Condors. Kevin Nicholls was in excellent form for the Buzzards against a strong Condors side, who fought back well from 5-0 down.

Newton Abbot Eagles opened up a 4-point lead at the top of the Second Division following a narrow 6-4 victory over Marldon.

Torbay Academy 7 extended their lead at the top of the 5th Division with a 6-4 victory at Brixham over the Swifts, with Nick Turner taking a maximum for the Academy side.
