PRESS REPORT – Sunday 9th Feb

Torbay Academy 1 are back to where they are used to being, at the top of the First Division table. Two fine victories this week, firstly an 8-2 victory over NA Eagles, followed by a 9-1 win over Brixham Gulls, has put them five points ahead of NA Batmen. Patrik Cincala with a maximum against the Eagles, Warren Ngai and Lenard Hernandez unbeaten against the Gulls.  NA Batmen will not be too worried though as they have two matches in hand. The Batmen’s latest encounter was a close affair against Brixham Sharks which they won 6-4. Adam Shipway with a superb maximum for the Sharks, Batmen needed the final doubles to clinch the victory.

The race for the Division Two title is hotting up! A busy week with six matches played. Perhaps the most significant result was Torbay Academy 3’s whitewash of NA Kestrels. The rapidly improving Academy team of Kacper Piwowar, Ivan Vaplaks and Alessandro Mitranescu were never troubled by the Kestrels as the Academy 3 team put in their challenge for the title. Denbury Tykes lead the pack but only on games won as they have the same number of points as Brixham Trawlers. However, both teams will be looking over their shoulders as their lead is just four point over Marldon and Torbay Academy 3 who both have two games in hand. Paul Hine secured another maximum as Denbury Tykes beat NA Hawks 8-2.  The Trawlers from Brixham lost 4-6 to a Helen Glover inspired Marldon.  There was a fine maximum for Taverners’ Colin Harrop as they shared the points with Marldon Tykes. Busy Marldon Tykes went on to defeat NA Falcons 8-2, thanks to a fine maximum from skipper Steve Metcalfe.  In a poor week for the Falcons they also lost out to Torbay Academy 2 going down 6-4, Ben Hoare securing a maximum for the Academy.

Torre Titans continue to dominate Division Three, Chris Harper with another maximum as the Titans defeated Brixham Seals 8-2.  The Titans closest rivals, NA Owls, dropped points in a drawn match, dominated by Torbay Academy 4’s Ed Damanskas. The Hasbeens, despite a maximum from Alan Tyrrell, lost ground on the leaders as they were defeated 4-6 by Torbay Academy 5.  Torre Panthers team of Rob Burridge, Steve Tucker and Steve Russell whitewashed struggling Brixham Dolphins. In an all Newton Abbot affair the Kites defeated the Harriers 8-2 thanks to an excellent maximum from Jasem Abu Ali stepping up as a reserve.

The top of the table clash in the Fourth Division saw The Grove come out on top at Torbay Academy 6. Dave Pearson headed The Grove’s challenge with a fine maximum well supported by Jeff Cornish and Pete Daly who won two each as the The Grove won 7-3 to open up a seven-point gap. However, the Totnes outfit have played an extra game over their challengers. Dawlish Diamonds kept their challenge up with a whitewash victory over Brixham Swifts. Peter Curtis, Tony Bussell and Frank Frain dominating throughout. There was another one-sided affair at Teign School where the NA Vultures team of Mark Heather, Sue Upsdale and Michael Bow defeated the Dawlish Dynamos 10-0.  Much closer was the mid table tussle between NA Ospreys and Torbay Academy 6 which the Academy won 6-4.
