SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE – SPONSORED BY ALBANY FLORISTS

PRESS REPORT – Sunday 1^st Mar

In a week that was set aside primarily for cup matches some very important league matches also took place. NA Buzzards 9-1 win at Brixham against the Pirates took them back to the top of the first division. Sonja Ryland and Kevin Nicholls were unbeaten for the Buzzards, Stuart Shipley preventing the whitewash with a fine victory over Nick Halse. NA Batmen’s whitewash victory over Halwell takes them into second place just six points behind the Buzzards with two matches in hand. Dennis and Shaun Gibbs didn’t drop a game for the Batmen with Josh Millman coming back from 0-2 down to defeat Dave Wadling and collect his maximum. To round off a good week for the Newton Abbot club in the first division NA Condors, with a Mark Burridge maximum, defeated Brixham Gulls 8-2.

The Marldon teams had an excellent battle which resulted in Marldon hitting the top of the second division table with a narrow 6-4 win over Marldon Tykes. Second placed Torbay Academy 3 shared the points with the Taverners, Jamie McGuire with a fine maximum for the Academy youngsters. Both Brixham Trawlers and Torbay Academy 2 haven’t given up the chase and had convincing wins over Newton Abbot TTC teams. The Trawlers, with Ian Saxby and Alan Maynard maximums, defeated NA Kestrels 8-2 while Torbay Academy 2 went one better beating NA Hawks 9-1, Lucas Bradshaw and Ben Hoare were unbeaten for the Academy.

The only third division encounter saw a whitewash victory for Torbay Academy 5, Neville Cregan, David Crowley and John Fowler too strong for the struggling Brixham Dolphins.

There were two quarter-finals of the singles handicap cup played between Newton Abbot teams. The NA Eagles team of Andy Tyrrell, Jim McIvor and Lauren Loosemore defeated NA Condors 350-310 and will meet NA Falcons in a semi-final encounter following the Falcons convincing win over NA Owls 371-299.

In the Dyment Doubles Handicap shield there was another win for NA Eagles. Andy Tyrrell, Jim McIvor and Gergely Kiss led clubmates the Kestrels throughout but never really shook off the challenge until the last couple of sets, eventually winning 330-294. Torbay Academy 3 are also still in both cup competitions, they saw off the challenge of NA Kites 330-269. Academy Youngsters’ Kacper Piwowar, Ivan Vaplaks and Alessandro Mitranescu are looking a good bet in both cups! Torre Titans had a fine win over NA Owls, Chris Harper, Robert Excell and Bill Keywood were always ahead and never looked like being caught as they closed out a 320-280 victory.
