PRESS REPORT – Sunday 12th Jan

It was a good week for Newton Abbot TTC in the Albany Florists Sponsored South Devon and Torbay Table Tennis League.  First Division leaders NA Batmen had a superb 9-1 win over a very strong NA Condors team. Naomi Jackson and Josh Millman were unbeaten as the leaders had to fight hard to secure their fine win. NA Buzzards in second place also returned a 9-1 victory and remain 10 points behind their club colleagues.  Halwell were the Buzzards opponents at Teign School and found Kevin Nicholls, Luke Bennett and Sonya Ryland in confident form, Dave Wadling collecting Halwell’s solitary point. Torbay Academy 1, despite an excellent maximum from Patrik Cincala, lost out 4-6 to a fine all-round team performance from Brixham Sharks.  In an all Brixham encounter the Gulls defeated the Pirates 8-2, maximums for the Gulls’ Mick Mercer and Chris Dunn.

Szymon Furgol, Patrik Cincala, Esme Suarez (Torbay Academy 1) Gordon Holmes, Adam Shipway, Bob Parkins (Brixham Sharks)

Second Division leaders NA Falcons, stretched their lead at the top to eight points with an 8-2 victory over the Taverners, Mike Dummett and Ed Crawford were unbeaten for the Falcons.  Torbay Academy 2 moved up to second place with a 6-4 win over Brixham Trawlers.  Denbury Tykes remain unbeaten as they edged the battle of the Tykes. Paul Hine was unbeaten for the Denbury side as they beat Marldon Tykes 6-4.  Rob Williams picked up the man of the match award with an impressive maximum for NA Kestrels but it was not enough to defeat clubmates the Hawks as the Kestrels narrowly lost 4-6.

Taverners’ Colin Harrop & Martin Dilkes v NA Falcons’ Mike Dummett & Ed Crawford

Torre Titans remain at the head of the third division as Tony Nguyen and Christopher Harper secured maximums in the Titans 8-2 victory over NA Harriers. Torre Panthers’ Steve Tucker collected their only points as they lost out 3-7 to NA Owls. An impressive 9-1 win for Hasbeens over NA Kites keeps the Hasbeens in contention, Richard Fitzgerald and Alan Tyrrell unbeaten for the Bishopsteignton outfit.  Brixham Seals’ Brian Pengelly and Joe Edwards were unbeaten in the Seals 6-4 victory over Torbay Academy 5.  The Academy’s fourth team fared better as they defeated Brixham Dolphins 8-2, David Rowsell and Ed Damanskas with maximums for Torbay Academy 4.

Chris Harper & Tony Nguyen (Torre Titans) v Ivor Copley & Andrew Davies (NA Harriers)

It’s as you were at the top of the fourth division with the leading two teams both picking up 8-2 victories. Leaders, Torbay Academy 6, were too strong for the inexperienced NA Vultures, Jerry Hollings and Jean Neafcy picking up maximums for the Academy. The Grove’s 8-2 win was over Dawlish Dynamos, David Pearson unbeaten for the Grove.  A Henry Greet man of the match performance helped the NA Ospreys defeat clubmates the NA Merlins 7-3.  The only whitewash victory of the week was Torbay Academy 7’s comprehensive defeat of struggling Brixham Swifts. Peter Brookes, William Hall and William Whittington well on top throughout against the Brixham newcomers.
