SOUTH DEVON & TORBAY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE – SPONSORED BY ALBANY FLORISTS

2023-24 SEASON

It was team singles handicap cup week in the South Devon and Torbay Table Tennis League with six second round fixtures taking place as teams attempted to reach the quarter finals.

Three of the matches were very close with the outcome being decided in the last set while three were fairly comfortable for the winning teams.

In an all Newton Abbot tie the first division NA Parrots proved to be far too strong for second division NA Kestrels. Rhys Lush, Dan Webster-Hall and Ben Hoare coped well with the 4 handicap start given to their opponents, the Parrots winning through 27-9.

The Dawlish Renegades team of Prabhu Kashap, Pierre Doutreligne and Mitch Bellham got off to a flying start in their encounter against NA Raptors and never let up, ending up with a 24-12 victory.

In a third v fourth division clash the NA Hawks team of Andy Guy, Pete Sercombe and Doug Morgan came out on top against a battling Torre Gladiators winning 23-13.

There was an interesting encounter between NA Vultures of the fourth division and first division Brixham Sharks, who brought in Issy Brown as a reserve to help out and it was down to her in the final set to clinch the victory 19-17. The Vultures youngsters, struggling with the consistency offered by the experienced Clive Banham and Chris Harper, fought really well but were eventually beaten by just the two games.

In another close encounter NA Falcons always led against Torbay Academy 3. The Falcons’ Louis Wilshire, Wojtek Cyron and Tomo Thompson had their lead cut to just two points going in to the final set and it was left to Tomo to pick up the necessary 2 games in the final set for a 19-17 victory.

The tie of round was a remarkable match between NA Eagles and Torre Vikings. The Vikings’ Chris Garner, Bill Keywood and Steve Russell were 6 points behind after set 6 and still 4 points down going into the last set. The rules of the competition award victory, if the match is drawn, to the side awarded the most handicap points so a 4-0 win in the final set would mean victory for the Vikings.  Bill Keywood duly obliged winning all four games and the Vikings progressed through to the quarter finals.

Chris Garner (Torre Vikings) v Jeremy Broad (NA Eagles)

Dan Webster-Hall (NA Parrots) v Ollie Malin (NA Kestrels)

There were a few rearranged league matches being played during the cup week.

In the first division Torbay Academy 1 moved up to second place behind NA Buzzards following a narrow 6-4 victory over struggling Halwell A, Patrik Cincala, with a rare outing, helping the Academy with a maximum.

The top two teams in the third division had comfortable victories, both against the bottom side Dawlish Renegades. The leaders Torre Vikings, with Chris Garner, Bill Keywood and Steve Russell on top throughout, whitewashed the Dawlish outfit playing with two reserves. Martin Dilkes and Colin Harrop were unbeaten as their Taverners’ team also defeated the Renegades who again had to use a reserve. In an all Torbay Academy affair the points were shared between their third and fourth teams. John Fowler with a maximum for Torbay Academy 3.
