Match Report

Yet another hard fought encounter at the Village Hall last night with Brixham Pirates winning a tight match by 6 sets to 4. It really promises to be a very exciting and interesting season in Division 2 especially towards the middle/bottom of the table where is nothing much to separate a number of evenly matched teams; in fact there are no weaker teams!!

Although it was another defeat for Taverners, 4 points were won and this season in particular every point will count!

As to the match, Martin Sharp won his three sets for Pirates and fully demonstrated his tennis pedigree (courtesy of Churston Tennis Club!) with his fluent style on both wings, his flexible wristwork and placement and a bit of loop thrown in! Martin may not had it all his own way but fully deserved his maximum. Martin was supported by Nicholas S who after a slow start to the evening won 2 sets.

For Taverners everybody contributed points which epitomises the team effort so far this season. In fact Colin, Martin and myself have all won the same number of sets in our first 6 matches which I think is quite unusual.

The doubles saw a closely fought set between Colin and Martin D and Martin S and Nicholas. The Pirates may have won both this final set of the evening and the match but the Taverners pairing again played well together and were perhaps unlucky not to extend the contest further.

A good and very competitive match which will be "reprised" when Taverners make the return trip to Brixham this Thursday!
