‘The Falcons welcomed their closest rivals to the Teign school for the first time this season. The match was played in an excellent competitive spirit, in fact on one or two occasions everyone lost sight of the score, such was the focus from both sides!
Geoff Read was unfortunate to lose a titanic battle with Chris Baron, but played well to defeat Mike Kavanagh in three straight games. Martin Dilkes enjoyed two victories and was unfortunate, given his quality of play, not to gain a maximum. Colin won two matches comfortably and played well, in one of the best matches of the night against Jeremy. Mike Kavanagh, suffering with a cold and nosebleed during the match, played as well as could be expected, but I am sure he will have better results ahead.
The home team, although trailing for most of the match, put up dogged resistance with Jeremy achieving his first maximum against the Taverners, winning the decisive match against Martin Dilkes (only just!).
With the Falcons 4-5 down, going in to the doubles, a close contest was envisaged. So it proved, with another epic contest, resulting in a narrow victory for Jeremy & Chris taking the score and final match result to five a piece. A fair reflection on the match, which yet again proved, what a great sport table tennis is. Thank you to my fellow team members; Mike and Chris and to the opposition; Geoff, Martin and Colin for contributing to a great night of table tennis.
I couldn’t write a match report without thanking Denis and Tony for their help in setting up the venue for our matches. It is appreciated, along with the home baked cake, handed out by Tony, at the end of the match.’
Jeremy
As the last time our 2 teams met, it was a competitive but sporting and enjoyable evening of table tennis which epitomises my view that when table tennis is played in the right spirit there is no better sport to play!!
A 5-5 draw was in my opinion the correct result which reflected "the ups and downs" of both teams throughout the evening. Just a quick mention though for Chris who after 2 losses and 2 -0 down to myself played incredibly well in the remaining games and with great concentration and ability to win in 5 and deservedly so!
Taverners will look forward to our final meeting of the season at Teign School on Friday 1st March which I am sure will be another enjoyable encounter.
