Match Report

A fascinating and enjoyable evening of table tennis at the Village Hall with Taverners "scrambling" a 5-5 draw against familiar opponents in recent years Marldon Tykes!

It certainly was a close encounter with Marldon Tykes going into a well deserved lead of 4-1 and 5-2 only for Taverners to fight back to win the last three sets to level the match.

Man of the Match (possibly unexpected?) was Chris Garner who had a super evening and convincingly secured an excellent maximum. Highlighted by his consistency particularly in the longer rallies, his balance between attack and defence and his usual determination, I never seen Chris play as well. His teammates Kevin and Steve T agreed!!

Although Chris took the plaudits, there were good performances from Colin and myself to secure 2 points each before we combined to win the decisive doubles. Martin had a very rare "off" night - I have had plenty of those! - but I know Martin will back on all cylinders next time.

Finally a quick mention for Steve Tyler, formerly of Okehampton but now residing in South Brent. Steve is another player with an interesting style of play who when playing well has a powerful attack and makes some fine retrieves away from the table. He is a welcome if now not so recent addition to our league.

It was also good to catch up with Kevin, another long time supporter of the SD&TTTL.

A sporting evening and one to enjoy.
