Match Report
Yet another 5-5 draw at the Village Hall last night, our 4th draw in a row and 6th in 15 matches so far!
Along with the Hasbeens (5 draws) Taverners are becoming the draw specialists in the South Devon and Torbay TT League this season. Get your bets on!!
It was certainly another "up and down" evening with Taverners taking an early 2-0 lead then losing 5-3 only to come back well (not for the first time this season) to draw.
In this rearranged fixture, the Torbay Academy 3 team came to Bishopsteignton with their usual young team, not their strongest on current form unlike the first time we played them but still a very good group of youngsters.
Player of the Match was Jamie McGuire who, playing only his 4th match of the season, was impressive with his coverage of the table, movement and consistency excellent throughout. His determination in winning some very tight games, in particular against Colin, culminated in Jamie only dropping one leg all night!
Jamie was well supported by the even younger and very talented Ivan Vaplaks who picked up 2 points. Ivan did lose to Colin in a very good set of quality table tennis and the best set of the evening. Colin continued his recent excellent form by winning 11-9 in the 5th.
Will Bevan may not have won a set on this occasion but as with his colleagues played with determination and a good deal of talent. Indeed Will was 2 games up against Colin only for the "wily" maestro to fight back and win in 5!
Martin and I continue to contribute to the team effort by winning important points. I hope this extends to the end of the season and in my case a few extra points would be good to improve my disappointing average!
The decisive doubles set went the way of Colin and Martin in 4 to secure another draw and maintain Taverners improved form since the New Year.
