Match Report

Another fine evening at the Village Hall and after 4 successive draws a win for Taverners so extending our unbeaten run to 7 games.

As usual our return match against Newton Abbot Hawks had its fair share of "ups and downs" but an 8-2 result was satisfying in the end.

Colin was again Player of the Match with 3 wins and therefore maintaining his excellent form since the Falcons match in January with 18 wins from 21. However it was a tight run thing last night with Ben coming so close to winning all 3 by only losing to Colin 12-10 in the final leg!

Ben played very well all evening and what was particularily impressive was his ability to operate different tactics against each of the Taverners players with almost complete success! His fluid attacking play and movement was good to watch.

Mentioning close sets, I must comment on my set against Jackie. 3 games went to deuce (one 19-17) with myself scraping home by 3 legs to 2. It was a long set (pity Pete the scorer!) comprising lots of long rallies permeated with some attacking shots. It was certainly not a classic but I would say it was an example of a "slug fest" with no quarter given in fierce combat!!

After another lengthy set against Ben with 2 deuces, I certainly got my money's worth! It also ended an unwelcome record of mine this season. My win against Jackie was my first in 5 having lost all the previous 9 this season.

Martin maintained his consistent form with 2 important points and for his fine contribution in the doubles set alongside Colin.

Playing Jackie for the first time was enjoyable despite the tension and the close set and Pete despite not being at the top of his game fought hard and played in his usual sporting way. In fact it was a pleasure to play against Pete, Jackie and Ben. Competitive but sporting throughout the evening.

Many thanks Hawks for a very enjoyable evening and good luck in your remaining League and Cup matches.
