Match Report
After the administrative "blip" last Monday, Taverners returned to the Village Hall to entertain Brixham Trawlers for our penultimate home match. Thank you Trawlers for being so understanding over the postponement.
After establishing a 3-0 lead and "dreaming" of our first win of the season, things went downhill despite the best efforts of the team and Taverners suffered another defeat to lose 6-4!
Brixham Trawlers have always been enjoyable to play against with their banter and sporting approach and last night was no exception. They were also boosted by 2 spectators to record the biggest attendance at the Village Hall in 22/23!
None of the players achieved a maximum but there were a number of highlights as follows;
Martin beating Ian in 5 high quality games. Ian again showed what a good player he is, especially with his exaggerated loop, but Martin prevailed this time and played very well with his excellent defensive technique.
Nick once again getting his money's worth and in particular winning in 5 games against your truly after being 2 games down and 10-8 down in the fourth! However Colin did win impressively in 4 to prevent a Nick maximum.
Newcomer Charles Lamden winning his first set against Colin after recently joining the Trawlers to deputise for Holly - we all hope Holly is back playing soon!?
Finally I was pleased to record only my second win of the season against Charles but disappointed to lose to Nick in 5 to go alongside a number of tight losses in recent weeks. At least I am playing much better than in the first half and enjoying table tennis. Further wins will come - how many is difficult to predict!!
An enjoyable and very competitive evening. Division 3 beckons with our current team unlikely to change. All Taverners would like in the interim is to record a win in Division 2 before we bid farewell to 2022/23 and look forward to next season!
