Match Report

Taverners played their final league match of yet another season on Thursday eveningso I thought you all deserved another of my match reports !! My last one I promise!!

Dawlish Renegades were our opponents and as the home team they hosted us at the Village Hall. Although Taverners won and we needed to win well to stay in contention for the Division 3 title, it was a very enjoyable evening against friendly and sporting opponents. Over the years, I have always found Dawlish teams to be a pleasure to play. Dawlish teams have also have produced some interesting and colourful characters who seem to remain long in the memory! I sure we remember some of  them!

On Thursday, it was therefore very good to play once more Steven Cooper one of the Dawlish characters mentioned earlier.

Table tennis evenings can and should develop into a bit of "catch up" and banter on occasions and talking to Steven about his busy life etc and his times in New Zealand was enjoyable. S remains an excellent player and despite not recording a win this time is difficult to beat and caused all of us problems! Indeed the standout match of the night for me was Steven v Colin who traded forehand shots with increasing velocity as each rally progressed! I had not played Steven since 2015/16 so I hope our paths will cross again before too long.

Both Pete and Laurie contributed to the evening and played their hearts out. Dare I suggest that Pete looks to play in Division 3 permanently next season while Laurie should just continue to play his way and enjoy table tennis.

For me, I have enjoyed life in Division 3 playing against some different teams and "new" players. What will season 2024/25 bring? We will just have to wait and see!

Meanwhile there is lots more table tennis to come before we reconvene for the next league season in October 2024. Best of luck everyone.
