Match Report

First league match of the New Year at the Village Hall with windy and wet conditions outside but pleased to say it was nicely warm inside!

A competitive evening of table tennis ensued and a pleasant one too against friendly and sporting opponents Torbay Academy 2. The evening also produced a welcome win for Taverners by 7 sets to 3 so levelling things up a bit towards the bottom end of the Division 2 table.

As far as individual performances were concerned, Martin was "Player of the Match" with an excellent maximum. Martin was rarely troubled and again used his combination bat to very good effect.

It was also very pleasing to see Colin gain 2 points with wins over Elsa and Ed. Indeed the match of the evening was Colin v Ed which could be described as a "high octane" clash between two "heavyweight" performers with no quarter given or asked for. Plenty of winners were made and effort expended before Colin edged home 14-12 in the fifth!

Having been demolished by Ed, I did come back to beat Elsa (first time ever I think?) and then performed well to lose to Neville in 5. However, I was 2-1 up in games so a bit disappointed but Neville, by mixing up his attacking and defensive styles in the final 2 legs deserved to come back and win the set.

All the Academy players played well with Neville's consistent all round play effective once more and Ed and Elsa both producing quality attacking shots to enhance the evening.

The doubles set was won for the fifth time this season by Colin and Martin to complete the 7-3 scoreline. It seems doubtful whether I will be able to break into this doubles combination anytime soon!!

Another enjoyable evening for the players and we look forward to the return fixture on 4th April.
