Match Report

Our latest match saw Taverners entertain the likely Division 2 Champions this season, Grove Guerillas at the Village Hall.

It has been a difficult few weeks for our team with 10-0 losses to both Brixham Pirates and NA Ravens. Despite both teams having "acquired" stronger personnel since the start of the season (not intentionally I should add), these results were still disappointing, in particular against the Ravens team when we were soundly beaten with a surprising lack of competitive edge shown for most of the match.

However, despite this setback, Taverners have been pretty competitive in other matches this season although we are currently anchored at the bottom of table!

Unsurprisingly, Taverners did lose to GG by 8 sets to 2 last night - still a decent result I think and one that demonstrated a lot of energy and fight.

Grove Guerillas are a very good side who ,if promoted, will perform well in Division 1. Spearheaded by Colin Butterworth, the best player in the Division and well supported by David Pearson and Andrew Gilhespy, the team has a good foundation for next season. On the night, Colin was imperious in both his singles and the doubles and was rarely troubled losing only one game (to Colin H). Colin has an excellent all round game as expected for an ex Bristol Premier League TT player!

David also secured a maximum using his combination bat to good effect and Andrew, after 2 losses came back impressively to beat Colin in 5. Andrew also featured in the "best" set of the evening when just losing out to Martin 14-12 in the final leg.

Just a quick mention of the Grove Primary School Club. Only formed a few years ago by Pete Daly and others?, it is always good to have another Club joining the table tennis "scene" based on good facilities, excellent volunteers and keen and sufficient players to support the initiative. Keep going Pete and the Club!

Taverners have 4 league matches to go plus the Dyment Doubles so lots still to play for. One thing you can be certain of is that the Taverners will continue to play hard, fairly and competitively until the end of the season.

Finally, thanks to GG for an enjoyable evening with banter/sportsmanship thrown in. Good luck in your remaining matches.
