On reflection the morning after our latest home match at the Village Hall, I think our performance against Halwell B was one of our most disappointing of the season.
Although an 8-2 defeat was a minor improvement from the first half, Taverners hoped for something a bit better this time out!
So what did not go to plan? Well, we have found it difficult this season to contain Rod and Mark. Both are seasoned performers with first division credentials and I for one have experienced problems with their styles of play. You could call it a clash of styles perhaps?! Rod is "all action" when "in the zone" and his desire and ability to attack is something opponents have to contend with and overcome!
Mark, on the other hand, is a more rounded player these days with lots of ability. In his younger days, Mark attacked more, playing expansively but made mistakes. Now he defends more away from the table, cuts out most mistakes and produces exaggerated movement/spin at times which can exasperate the opposition. Mark has played in the SD&TTTL league for well over 30 years and still going strong.
The 2 points garnered by the Taverners were sets against Chris Dunn. I think it is fair to say that Chris has had his problems this season but last night he played very well - losing to Colin and Martin in the final game. Credit though to Colin for coming back in the fifth to "squeeze" home 13-11.
The doubles set was won by Halwell B in 5 games coming back from 2 games down after an excellent start by Colin and Martin. A change to attack was the key to the revival from Mark and Rod.
Now on to the match v NA Falcons at the VH next Monday. Personally, I am hoping for an improvement in the net/edges count next time out. They do say that luck evens itself out over the season - lets hope so but not long to go this season!!
