Southport Table Tennis League holds finals night
Second Division winner Tim Nelson, receiving his trophy from Merseyrail's Dave Mullan
For the second year running, Merseyrail generously sponsored the Southport & District Table Tennis Championships.
Following a very successful and well organised qualification day at Formby TTC on Sunday, Argyle Tennis Club was again the venue for the Finals Night held on Wednesday 19th February 2014.
There were seven trophies up for grabs in the evening, and 10 players competed for them. Of these, only three were not from Formby TTC, and two of those played each other to guarantee at least one non-Formby win!
The evening began with the Open Singles semi-finals, and in a switch from last year, Robert Barker beat Joe Mullin, and Jack Dempsey beat Steve Green to come through their semi-finals.
In the Third Division Singles, Sam Pierce (Formby TTC) beat Ben Shellien (Formby TTC), and in the Open Doubles, Robert Barker/Jack Dempsey (Formby TTC) beat Steve Green/Gary Watson (Formby TTC).
Following the intermission the Over 55s Singles saw Gordon Wood (Waddington) beat Paul Lunan (Southport TTC), and then in the Juniors Singles, Robert Barker repeated his feat of last year in beating Jack Dempsey.

The Over 40s Singles was again won by Steve Green (Formby TTC), this year beating his doubles partner, Gary Watson (also Formby TTC).
The Second Division Singles was won by young Tim Nelson (Formby TTC) over Danny Houghton (Southport TTC).
The highlight of the evening was the Open Singles final between Robert Barker and Jack Dempsey both of Formby TTC. This was a much closer game than the one between them last year, but Jack once more triumphed.
