Match Report

Congratulations to East Boldon Amigos on their first victory in Division One of the Sunderland Table Tennis League.

Following last weeks 'baptism of fire' Amigos stormed into a demanding 4 - 0 lead. Wins from Jamie Collins over saints Tom Bainbridge, a superb attacking and counter-attacking display from David Byers saw him overcome experienced Chris Blake by 3 - 2, young saints debutant Ethan Brown lost narrowly 3 - 1 to Neil Wilkinson before Byers accounted for Bainbridge in another close encounter eventually winning 11-9 in the 5th and deciding end.

Blake and Bainbridge stopped the rot with a 3 - 1 over Byers and Collins in the doubles set, before Brown pulled another back with an excellent personal 3 - 1 win over Collins - with Blake overcoming Wilkinson in straight sets the match score stood at 4 - 3 with everything still to play for.

A thrilling encounter between Byers and Brown saw some great powerful play from both players as the Boldon faithful watched on. Brown took a 2 - 1 lead before Byers clawed himself back into the game by taking the 4th game to take the game into the 5th end. The final game ebbed and flowed with Brown initially having the upper-hand taking a 5-3 lead before Byers picked up 4 points in a row to lead 7-5 and eventually winning the set 11-9 to deservedly secure a memorable hattrick and player-of-the-match award. Brown should be very proud of his performance in his first match in the top flight.

Blake pulled a set back for the Saints with a 3 - 0 win over Collins to keep his side in with a chance of a hard-fought draw but it was not to be - in another tight game Wilkinson saved 3 match points against Bainbridge coming back from 7-10 down with some great retrieving to eventually secure the set 12-10 and a 6 - 4 victory for Boldon Amigos.

A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining match played in excellent spirit - well done to Amigos and good luck for the rest of the season.
