Ron Lindsay died suddenly this week. Thanks to Tam Lawlor who has provided this memory of his friend.

Ron started his table tennis career in Aberdeen, playing with and against Richard Yule, Johnny Moir and Charlie Matthews.

He played in almost every league in Scotland as his teaching career took him around the country including a spell in the Western Isles and further afield to places like China, Italy, Spain and Romania. While he was teaching in China, he met his wife Regina and relocated back to the UK in Sheffield and then returned to Glasgow.

In fact, he spent most of his years in Glasgow, playing with many clubs including GCED, Springburn and the Post Office to name but a few. He achieved a Scottish top 10 ranking in the 1980s, which was unusual for a defensive player and played in the first version of the Scottish National League in the early 80s, for Springburn. Ron also played in the inaugural Scottish veterans’ tournament (November 1993) at Ward Road, Dundee securing singles and doubles titles.

In his later years he played in the WoS league with various clubs and continued to help with coaching youngsters.

Ron will be dearly missed by all the friends he made in table tennis from all over the world.Ron - Nov 1993
