Brentwood Youth Table Tennis Tournament Review - Friday 5th April 2024

U13s Singles

We had 9 entries for the U13 event with 2 groups playing, many playing in their first tournament which was great to see with representation from Buttsbury & Hutton. Group A saw Joshua Freeman win the group with Martis Heyes finishing runner up with 2 wins. Rayan collected 1 win over Abhir to finish 3rd. Group B had 3 wins each for Vivaan Babbar & Billy Andrews before Vivaan won the game between them in the last group game to top the group, Hugo had 2 wins with Mitchell beating Ethan in 5 ends to record a win. The semi finals saw wins for Joshua over Billy in 4 and Vivaan over Martis in 3 to set up a final betwen Joshua & Vivaan. Vivaan took a close first set before winning the 2nd as Josh closed out a close 3rd set and continued his come back with wins in the 4th & 5th to win the final 3-2. 

U16 Singles

6 entries here as some familiar names in the Brentwood league were in action with Evie, Oscar & Lucy all playing joined by Joseph, Callum & Thomas, all 6 from Buttsbury. Evie won games over Joseph/Callum to win her group before Joseph beat Callum to come runner up. Lucy/Oscar had both recorded wins over Thomas and were playing for top spot in the other group as a game that went to 5 could of gone either way, Oscar won a close 5th end coming back from 2-1 to claim winner of the group as Lucy finished runner up. Callum beat Thomas in 5 to finish 5th, Lucy/Evie semi final went to 5 with Lucy taking a lead, Evie coming back to go 2-1 up before Lucy took it to 5 in which Evie won 11-8, Oscar was up against younger brother Joseph as Oscar won in 4 to set up a final with Evie. Evie went 2 up in the final before clinching the win 15-13 in the 3rd end. 

U19 Girls

This event had 3 entries with Francesca Hart joining Lucy Elliott & Evie Knaapen (all Buttsbury players), Lucy took an early lead v Francesca who won the next 2 ends before Lucy produced a come back to win in 5, Evie won her 2 matches in 3 ends v Francesca & Lucy to win the U19 Girls Singles.  

U19 Boys 

Again with 3 entries in the Boys group Harry Chivers from Mountnessing & Jamie Elliott from Buttsbury joined the competition with Oscar Hutt also in the group. Oscar was in a group with 2 of the youngsters near the top of the premier division averages as Harry/Jamie both won matches in 3 over Oscar who was holding his own before setting up a final. Harry took a 2-0 lead 12-10, 11-8 before Jamie come back taking the 3rd 9-11 before Harry clinched the win 11-4 in the 4th. 

U13 Doubles

The U13 doubles saw 4 pairs in a group, (Hugo/Billy, Joshua/Vivaan, Mitchell/Rayan, Abhir/Ethan). Hugo/Billy & Joshua/Vivaan both had 2 wins recorded against the other pairings before Joshua/Vivaan won the decider between them in 4 ends as Rayan/Mitchell won a close game in 4 v Ethan/Abhir taking 2 sets 12-10 to finish 3rd in the group. 

U19 Doubles 

Again we had 4 pairs in the group with 3 mixed pairs, Lucy/Harry, Evie/Jamie, Francesca/Oscar, Joseph/Callum. Both Lucy/Harry & Evie/Jamie had recorded 2 wins each over the other pairs although both challenged well, Joseph/Callum losing 8-11, 12-14, 8-11 to Harry/Lucy & Oscar/Francesca also running both pairs close in each set. It was the mixed pair of Francesca/Oscar who won in 4 over Joseph/Callum to come 3rd in the group while Lucy/Harry took a 2-0 lead over Evie/Jamie in the winners take all game before the later come back winning 11-4 in the 3rd, both Lucy & Harry hit some great winners in the 4th to win 11-4 and finish as group winners.

Junior Handicap 

This event had 17 entries with some of the youngsters playing junior league matches having the chance to play some of the older juniors playing adult league and very high standard table tennis so was a great watch and experience for those who played. There was 1 game before the last 16 games which was Mitchell v Harry which started 16 -18 but harry showed his class and consistency to overcome the deficit. The last 16 had wins for Joseph, Martis, Evie, Joshua, Hugo, Billy, Vivaan & Jamie. All games were close and 3 went to a deciding set with Jamie/Francesca 21-17, Evie/Oscar 21-16 & Billy/Callum 21-18 in the deciders. Joshua/Joseph was the closest game in the last 8 with Joshua winning both games 24-22, 21-19, Billy beat Martis, Vivaan beat Jamie & Evie beat Hugo. Last 4 was Joshua/Billy who met at the same stage in the U13 singles earlier in the day, Billy won the first 21-9 before Joshua come back and won 15,16 in the next 2. Evie edged out Vivaan 21-18 in both ends to set up a final between Joshua/Evie who had both already had success in their age group singles. Another very close handicap game as Evie won 23-21 & 24-22 to become Brentwood Junior Handicap Cup Winner.  

Many thanks to everyone who helped with this event, Frances, Keith, Ellie & Nisha who spent many hours umpiring matches and helping with the running of the event.
