Press release four 2024/2025 Season
Weeks Nine and Ten
Buttsbury A has taken the lead in the premier division although it may be temporary as Billericay A has a match in hand. The still undefeated Rob Burton was their star man with 3 wins in the 7-3 defeat of Brentwood A and a repeat performance against lowly Brentwood B. Billericay A dropped just their second point of the season as Mountnessing A’s Elaine Sayer defeated Norbert Fullerton. Keith Adams and Ian Wall maintained their 100% records.
Billericay C is now third but given the 21 point behind Buttsbury A the premier league now seems a two-team race. By contrast 14 points separate third and eight places. Billericay C picked a 6-4 victory over Mountnessing B, Garry Hartgrove with a hat rick but succumbed to their own B team 7-3, Gary Ward taking player of matches honours. The B team found Hutton A a tougher proposition and the match ended in a 5-5, Alex Ware, proving that premier league is to his liking, earning a hat trick for Hutton and now averaging a very respectable 61%
Navestock arrived at Brentwood B with just 2 players but left with a very creditable 6-4 victory. Navestock supremo, Greg Cooper, led the way with a hat trick and partnered Mike Lucey to a match clinching double success.
Greg’ s team followed this up with another 6-4 win, this time over Hutton A. Navestock’s maestro Rick Klein (averaging 88.80%) again leading the way with 3 singles wins. Hutton debutant Gheorghe Nita picked up 2 wins including a lengthy battle to overcome Denis Crapnell 12-10, 8-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7. Crapnell gained revenge with partner Klein in a five set doubles win over Alex Ware and Nita.
Brentwood A hit top form as they saw off Billericay D 8-2, hat tricks for Jon Stokes and Trevor Carter. However it was closer than it might appear. Tony Ayliffe lost in five sets to Stokes and Carter then concluded the evening by partnering Colin Barham as they lost in five sets to the same pairing.
Premier League leaders; Buttsbury A 61 points (played 7), Billericay A 58 points ((6).
The first division is proving to be closely contested with just 19 points separating the top 8 teams, several of whom have matches in hand.
In keeping with a very closely matched division no less than 5 of the 9 matches in this report were decided on the doubles finale.
Mountnessing C head the table, winning encounters with their own D team and Hutton Community B 6-4. Michael Rowe picked up 5 wins over the 2 matches and Dave Woolmer (averaging 100%) a player of the match treble against Hutton. The C v D was notable as every player picked up at least one singles win so everyone went home with something.
To prove that it was no fluke Mountnessing D repeated the feat against Buttsbury D. Lyndon Bubb picking up player of the match with his 2 wins. Bob Francis also won twice for the D team as did Ron Salton who then partnered Martin Sorrell to the clinch the win. The doubles included an epic 17-15 second set win to break the morale of Buttsbury and take the match 6-4.
Hutton Community B is in the title mix as they saw off rivals Writtle A 7-3. Charlie Ware again starring for Hutton, happy days for the Ware family.
Buttsbury B have 2 matches in hand and saw off Writtle B 6-4 with good team work, Frances Hutt and Geoffrey Doggart seeing of Bob Hillis and Shengbing Zhu in the doubles nightcap. Writtle’s Neil Wood secured a hat trick of singles, keeping his 100% record in tact, but still found himself on the losing side.
Writtle A are in second place after a 10-0 win over Billericay Burstead but have a match in hand over the leaders. Dave Moles in fine form for Writtle and maintaining his 100% average.
The juniors of Buttsbury C, guided by veteran Ray Horton, pounded Brentwood C 10-0. Lucy Elliott again the star turn, without dropping a set. Lucy was well supported by Oscar Hutt. Lucy is averaging 76.19% from 21 matches.
First Division Leaders: Mountnessing C 45 points (7 played), Writtle A 44 (6), Buttsbury C 42 (7), Hutton Community 40 (6).
