Press release Two 2024/2025 Season
Weeks three and four.
In the premier league Billericay A continued their excellent start to the season, beating Brentwood B 10-0 and Billericay B 9-1. For Billericay B Gary Ward defeated Debbie Auvache 3-1 and took Bruce Kettle to 5 sets. In the 2 matches Gary was the only the player to take a set of a Billericay A player. This season the A team have fielded numbers 4, 5, 9 12, and 29 in the Brentwood league individual ranking.
Buttsbury A, current title holders, are close behind Billericay A. Rob Burton and Paul Sturton with 3 wins and Evie Knaapen with 2 wins comfortably beat Billericay D 9-1. However, Kevin Smart weaved his pimpled magic for the D team to defeat Evie in 4 sets. Buttsbury then proceeded to top the Billericay C team by the same score, Rob Burton leading the way with a player of the match performance.
Brentwood league newcomer Sarah Lockwood has made a superb start, beating Gary Ward and John Gagg as her Mountnessing B team lost 4-6 at Billericay B. John Webber shone for Billericay winning 3 singles and linking with Gary to win the doubles. Sarah then joined another newcomer, Abigail Gowland, as both bagged trebles as Brentwood B were beaten 9-1. They concluded that evening with a comfortable win in the doubles. Adam Garson overcame Lin Roff in a close 3 setter, 11-9, 14-12, 11-9.
Navestock’s talisman Rick Klein was in fine form with 3 wins as they drew 5-5 with Billericay C, a match remarkable with every singles going to at least 4 sets. Gary Hartgrove won twice for the C team and Denis Crapnell for 2 for Navestock. Mike Lucy lost twice in deciding sets for Navestock. Rick again won 3 singles as Navestock completed their first victory at their new home, 7-3 against Billericay D. Mike Lucy won twice for the Navestock Siders. Tony Ayliffe won twice for the D team, including a 12-10, 5-11, 11-9, 6-11,12-10 nail bitter against Mike Lucy.
Mixed fortunes for the Hutton Community A team. A 7-3 win over Brentwood A with Alex Ware winning 3 singles for Hutton and Jon Stokes, in a welcome return to the Brentwood league, winning twice for Brentwood A. Then the very strong Mountnessing A team came away with a 9-1 at the community centre, with trebles for James Hobley and Elaine Sayer. Credit to Alex Ware, taking Elaine to five sets and beating Steven Barker for the sole Hutton point.
Premier Leaders: Billericay A 29 points, Buttsbury 27 and Mountnessing A 14 (played 2 matches).
Writtle A are setting the early pace in division one, already 11 points ahead of second placed Buttsbury C. They beat Mountnessing C 7-3 although Mountnessing’s Michael Rowe came away with 3 singles wins and the player of the match. Suzanne Shaw lost 9-11 in the decider to Salih Salim. Salih, Ian Hockley and Andy Swales all finished the evening with 2 singles wins. Writtle A then thumped their B team 9-1, the very experienced Adi Kamma taking match honours. Salih Salim also picked up a treble.
Performance of the week was at Brentwood C where the Buttsbury D team arrived a player short, giving themselves a 0-3 deficit to overcome. They left with a very creditable 5-5 draw, a treble for Keith Cullen and 2 wins for Ray Horton. Dave Humble picked up Brentwood’s sole singles win and partnered Colin Griffiths in the doubles to salvage a draw.
Keith and his men managed to convene a full complement when they met Billericay Burstead and ran out 8-2 winners. Hat tricks for James Hughes and Lyndon Bubb, with consolation singles wins for John White and Tony Barnes. Colin Howard came close for Burstead, losing 14-16 in the decider to Lyndon.
Buttsbury B is well positioned with a match in hand. They defeated Mountnessing 9-1 with Kevin Willis leading the charge for Buttsbury. A much closer match than appears at first sight with 5 singles going to 4 or 5 sets. John Hickey in the match of the evening losing 4-11, 16-14, 5-11, 11-9, 11-9 to Frances Hutt.
Buttsbury C were involved in two matches with an identical 6-4 score. They lost to Hutton Community B although junior Lucy Elliott took pride of place for Buttsbury with 3 singles wins. Nick Giles and Jago Ware won twice for Hutton. They reversed the score against Mountnessing D but yet against the player of the match, Mountnessing’s Nick Rounce, found himself on the losing side. Lucy Elliott and Jeremy Griffin both won twice for Buttsbury. In both these matches the final doubles proved conclusive.
Leaders Division one: Writtle A 26 points, Buttsbury C 15, Hutton Community 14 and Buttsbury B 14 (both played 2 matches).
