The group stages of the Hastings & District Table Tennis League Team Handicap Event came to an end with group winners and runners-up qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Hollington B maintained their form to win Group1, brushing aside Bexhillians A 8-1 with maximums for Keith Young and Adam Akar and two from Yasar Akar.

NALGO A squeezed past Tackleway B 5-4 despite Simon Newstead’s treble for the losers, as Paul Hyland and Mike Courtnage took two each for NALGO.

In the clash of the two unbeaten teams Hollington came out on top 6-3 against NALGO with Hyland’s maximum the highlight. Keith Young, Adam Akar and Brad Britt all won two for Hollington.

With both teams eliminated, Bexhillians A beat Tackleway B 6-3 in a dead rubber.

 

Saints won Group 4 in convincing style, opening with a 9-0 defeat of the juniors of St. Leonards Academy with Rob Clemence, Neil Pankhurst and Trevor Fountain unbeaten. Jonah Davies came closest to a win for the Academy in two tight games against Fountain (+2).

Saints also beat NALGO B 7-2 with three wins for Clemence and and two for Pankhurst and Fountain. Ron Spencer picked up both NALGO’s wins but Academy will progress in second place.

 

Third Division champions Monarchs won Group 3 with a 7-2 defeat of Tackleway A, who took the last two sets. Peter Harding was unbeaten and Alison Jordan and Andrew Edwards both won two for Monarchs who won four of the five three-game sets.

Bexhillians B scraped through 5-4 against Tackleway A courtesy of Malcolm Hilton’s maximum. Mike Funnell won twice for the losers.

 

Hollington A (Ryan Demeza, Kieran Gibbs, Amelia Long) sewed up Group 2 with a 9-0 dismissal of Bexhillians C, who still qualified in second place.

The closest Bexhill came was late in the match when Long (+6) beat Alan Chumbley 21-19 in the decider.

Hollington beat Tigers 6-3 with a maximum for Gibbs and two for Demeza, while Steph Sargent had a critical mid-match win over John Campbell (+13) at 22-20 in the third.
