Observer 23-11-18

The match of the week in the Hastings & District Table Tennis League came with the clash of the two pre-season favourites in Division Two, involving three unbeaten players and one who had lost only once. The latter was Saints A’s Ron Davenport and his maximum helped his side to a 5-5 draw with Hollington A who had two wins each from Shaun Godfrey and Kevin Barry. Jamie Martin’s run of wins for Saints ended in the opening set of the match when he went down in five games to Godfrey. Davenport came through against Barry in four games, taking the fourth 19-17.

A single point now covers the top three, with Tackleway C’s 6-4 defeat of Bexhill G giving them a share of the lead with Saints. Adrian Goodrum and Kevin Rowe won two each for Tackleway as did Tina Beaney for Bexhill in a tremendous match where five contests went the distance, four of which in Tackleway’s favour.

Bob Lowe’s maximum led Monarchs A to a tight 6-4 win over Hollington B who had two wins each from Rob Clemence and Ryan Demeza. Monarchs had the finishing power to take the two sets which went the distance including a doubles win from 0-2 down.

Tackleway A have not had the best of starts in Division One but came back to form with an 8-2 win over Bexhill B. Roy Funnell was unbeaten while Mike Funnell and James Gorridge won two for Tackleway and Andy Summers two for the losers.

The two mid-table sides produced some rallies above their station and, not for the first time, a Tackleway side had the edge in the contests which went to five.

Maximums from Rose Rainton and Robin Gibbs took Hollington Academy B to a 7-3 win over Bexhill D.

In Division Three, new signings Peter Saunders and Rob Mitchell, with three and two wins respectively, took Tackleway F to a 7-3 win over Hollington C who had two wins from Mick Oakman.

Saints C pulled clear of Hollington C at the top with an 8-2 win at Hollington D with maximums from Dave Watters and Andy Murphy.
