Watts Cup Final 2019

Hollington Academy A completed the Hastings & District Table Tennis League double when they won the Watts Cup team knock-out competition to add to their league title. In a final played at Hastings Academy, both teams’ home venue, Academy A beat Saints A 6-0.

The margin of victory came as somewhat of a surprise to most, given that the league champions had lost and drawn their two league encounters with Saints.

The Academics took control from the start with three wins in straight games.

After Nathan Darby and Ryan Heselden won the opening doubles against James Winchester and John Wond, Paul Barry beat Dave Butler and Darby beat Wond.

At this point Saints would have expected to get on the scoresheet with their No.1 Butler facing Heselden, only for the Academy youngster to pull off possibly his best ever victory. After Heselden took a 2-0 lead, the experienced Butler levelled at 2-2 before going down 9-11 in the decider.

Barry beat Winchester 3-1 to clinch the cup for Hollington Academy 5-0.

The first dead rubber doubles was played and won by Academy and even this was a triumph as Barry and Darby beat league doubles champions Butler and Winchester in five games.
