Match Report
In this interesting “local Tackleway derby” the A side had the “ace in the pack” Simon Philipsz who made all the difference in taking them to a 7-3 victory. The former top sixty England-ranked player was in a different class, sweeping aside the opposition with gorgeously guided attacking winners whenever he chose to play them. So, with four games in the bag for the A side the B side had to battle with the best of the rest to salvage something from the match. Mike Funnell(B) had a good game with James Gorridge(A), somehow clawing back from two sets down he survived to a fifth set before James unleashed his full repertoire of shots. The younger man's fabulous sweeping control from attack to defence and back again took him to a comfortable 11-5 win in the decider. Ken McEwan(A) had two good wins, undoing Mike with flat sharp chop and whipping smash in four sets and doing almost exactly the same against Roy Funnell(B). James and Roy had a classic battle with James’s incredible consistency taking him into a two-set lead before Roy's “early take” rapid attack found some real form and finally the win at 11-9 in the 5th set. Performance of the night however must go to Steve Hickey(B) who won two games. He had a fabulously exciting encounter with James before his digging push and cracking flat smash with a pinch of luck saw him over the line 11-9 in the 5th set. The final game of the evening was an interesting “clash of the pimples” where Kev just couldn't handle Steve's rubbers. The victory easily went to Steve in three as he pushed and smashed to take the game and a well-earned point for the B side.
