Match Report
A lovely local derby - although the favourites Tackleway A were never in doubt of victory whilst holding the ace in the pack John Boreham. The current club singles champion gave another virtuoso performance of beautifully alternating deep flowing chops and huge sweeping loops, switching effortlessly from backhand to forehand like poetry in motion. He swept aside all opposition without dropping a set including the doubles - equating to four games for the A side.
The best of the rest saw some epic battles with Muhammad Kiani (A side) pulling off a great victory on deuce in the fifth set against Roy Funnel (B side) in this big hitting encounter. Roy then got some luck himself against James Gorridge (A side) in the game of the night, with Roy's incredible blocking and cracking attack just edging out James’s fabulously consistent all-round game 11-9 in the decider. James made-up for it with two good wins over Mike Funnell and Steve Hickey (both B side), soaking up everything they could offer and then smashing his way to victories.
Mike got on the score sheet with a good three sets to one win over Muhammad which saw flurries of terrific forehand smashes from the latter but Mike’s blocking, retrieving and steady attack saw him prevail in a close finish. Steve also got a victory over Muhammad, his short chop and cracking flat smash taking him over the line 11-9 in the fourth set to make the match score 3-7, securing a well-earned point for the B side.
