Match Report

A lovely local derby between Tackleway B and Tackleway C with lots of tension and excellent play ensuing from the friendly rivalry in their joint bids to get more points on the board in this extremely competitive and high quality top division!

First up Roger Pingram for the B side with his combination rubbers and unorthodox style proved a little too awkward for Danny who couldn't quite get a leg despite coming close and the B side man put the game away in three straight sets.

Game 2 saw Mike Funnell - B side - against emerging young talent Jacob McCarthy - C side - with the youngster racing into a two set lead as he rather bamboozled Mike with short chops and long looping smashes to each wing and often beyond reach! The 3rd set was far more even though with Mike blocking retrieving and attacking much quicker to keep the points even but then suddenly it was all over as Jacob edged over the line first from deuce to take it 12-10.

Muhammad Ali Kiani - B side - and Adrian Goodrum of the C side then had a classic 'tit for tat' chop, push and smash game all the way to the 5th before Muhammad managed to eke out a nice points buffer to secure victory 11-5.

In the 4th game of the night old adversaries (of 30 years plus) Mike and Danny contested yet another game but this time Danny's wonderful range of spinning serves short jab pushes and quick fire smashes were really consistent as he edged the first two sets to 9 in each! Mike came back in the 3rd with some good control and well-aimed smashes to take that one comfortably to 6 but Danny upped his game with some fabulous winning smashes to claim a great victory 11-4 in the 4th!

Two games all in the match with all to play for as Roger and Jacob squared to each other but the old master’s magnificent defence and unusual slamming chop smash proved too tricky for Jacob as he ran out a three straight winner.

The doubles was an edgy 'nip and tuck' game all the way to the 5th before the B side combo (Roger and Muhammad ) managed to grind out a lead against Danny and Jacob to take it over the line 11-5.

4-2 to the B side now in the match as Mike and Adrian prepared for yet another encounter-with their list of duals going back 40 years or more and honours more or less even! This one went all the way to the 5th set yet again as the two almost mirrored each other with tentative blocks and slow angle drives peppered with some nice smashes but it was Adrian with more consistency who managed to claim the spoils this time running out an 11-8 winner!

Muhammad and Jacob followed that with another very close game with the C side man testing his opponent to the limit with terrific long rasping loops to all corners of the table that were somehow being retrieved and replied with some thundering smashes! What a game but someone had to win and it was Muhammad who got over the line first to conclude this epic battle and claim victory 11-7.

Roger then completed a great maximum and a great night for him beating Adrian 11-5 in the 4th.

Final game of the evening saw Muhammad and Danny exchange some lovely combinations of very accurate push and chop control through to forceful attack on both wings with nothing between them but the first two sets both favoured Muhammad to put him 2 up. However in the 3rd set he managed to get away with some fabulous attacking play to take it 11-5 to complete a good win and a nice maximum on the night.

The match score ended up in a 7-3 win for the B side giving them a welcome three points while the C side thoroughly deserved their well-earned point.
