   Adeyfield 1st   10 - 0   Row

Easy win for us as the Row old-timers Bob Cummins and Mick Chandler were unable to exert any sustained pressure on the champions. Row regular Paul Jolly was indisposed, and the closest Adeyfield came to dropping a set was when skipper Bob “forgot” (his own word) to ring substitute Richard Anderson to see if he could play. Richard would have been a handful, even for Glen Wilkes and Michael Boardman.

A lot of the focus this season has been on Glen’s return to the fold, after a 3 year break and a 9 year absence from Hemel. Glen’s made more comebacks than Sinatra ever did, and his loss to Abdul Rahim last month, if not his first in Hemel this millennium, was certainly one of very few. I hesitate to say that this was Abdul’s best ever win but it must at least be a very good 10 contender.

Back to this match, and it’s a credit to Bob & Mick's longelivity that that are still competing at this level in their senior years, after so many decades of great service to the League. Bob was a town’s Men's Singles finalist as far back as 1961, and already a legend before I even started playing in the League in 1968. I’ve had the privilege of playing against them most years since, mostly terrific struggles, and the combined total of those sets now adds up to 114.
