   Adeyfield 1st   10 - 0   Northchurch 1st

Back to back whitewashes for Adeyfield, though we were fortunate to get all ten in this one, and Northchurch will be aggrieved not to have come away with at least a set or two to their name, Strange, therefore, that with so many sets closely contested, that over half of the first 11 games of the match were decided by scores of 11-3 or less.

I opened with a see-saw affair with Simon Whale which, in the decider, saw me 4-1 up then 6-9 down. But coming out an 11-9 winner thanks in part to an ‘air shot’ serve by Simon at 9-9. Andy Knibbs kept up the good work at the expense of a sprightly Frank Beck, and Michael Boardman absolutely hammered our ex club colleague, Toofan Khalili. I enjoyed a comfortable win over Toofan too, but Andy, before disappearing for an early bath, struggled, as Toofan showed his real colours at last, in by far the best set of the night, with plenty of classy hitting/counter-hitting rallies.

Michael seemed to be wilting away before our eyes and I don’t think the end of the match could come quick enough for him. The final doubles was a real struggle, with plenty of unforced errors, not that I helped much in the department, before we luckily got over the line at 11-8 in the fifth.
