Adeyfield B 8 - 2 St. George's A
With the top of Division 2 remaining as close as ever, and with fellow club mates, Adeyfield C, having been given a 10-0 walkover by Northchurch A, Adeyfield B needed a good result to stay in touch. They duly obliged with an 8-2 win, although they were given a tough fight by St. George's A. The visitors actually went one up in the opening set, with Mariusz Puczynski, albeit a little inconvenienced by a back issue, going down to a four games defeat to some good play from Gerry Evans. Martyn Ford pulled the match score level in three close games against Tim Boyall, and the home team moved ahead when Martin Johnson came from one game down to defeat John Figg in four games. From then on, Adeyfield B kept up the momentum, despite both Tim & John taking further games, to extend the advantage to 8-1 after all the singles had been played. The doubles was a much tighter affair, with Martyn/Mariusz ahead early on, but back came Gerry/John for St. George's A, as fortunes ebbed and flowed, and it inevitably went to the decider. Both teams were ahead at various stages, but St. George's A just nicked it at 11-9, courtesy of a missed smash from Adeyfield B.
It leaves the top of the table still finely in the balance, and with Crown & Sceptre B meanwhile winning 8-2 against their C team, it leaves Adeyfield B equal second with C&S B, just two points behind the new, clear, leaders, Adeyfield C - with just three more weeks of fixtures to go. Behind the top three, in form McAlpine beat Flamstead A 7-3, and are only eight points off the top, whilst Flamstead A are down to fifth, a further two points back, but significantly, with a game in hand against the bottom team as well as the easiest remaining matches (on paper). So, it is still very much a five way battle, as the seasons draws to an end.
