Adeyfield B 10 - 0 Northchurch A
Adeyfield B came into this match in third place, in a tight battle of the top of the division, and probably needing a big win, against struggling Northchurch A, to keep their promotions hopes alive. That is actually what happened, however it was very unfortunate for Northchurch A that due to a long-term illness of one of their players, plus an injury to another, they could only field one regular A team player, plus a reserve from Division 3, so as a match, this ended up being rather one sided. Nevertheless, the Adeyfield trio of Mariusz Puczynski, Trevor McFarlane and Martin Johnson did not slip up, against the Northchurch A pairing of Bronwen Watson and Chris Watson, with Bronwen picking up one leg, against Martin, as a consolation. The win takes Adeyfield B back to the top of the table, for now.
Elsewhere, this week, there were two other matches affecting the top positions. Firstly, Flamstead A gained a big 9-1 win over Crown & Sceptre C, and although it only puts them in 4th position, with their final game, plus their game in hand, both being against Northchurch A, they look heavy favourites to take the title. The second other match saw a vital 6-4 win for Adeyfield C over Crown & Sceptre B, which leap-frogged Adeyfield C above C&S B by one point, and also put them within a 6-4 win over their fellow Adeyfield team, in both teams' final match of the season, to overtake them and grab that second promotion spot behind Flamstead A, barring a highly unlikely very big C&S B win against a very strong McAlpine team. McAlpine had closed on the top four, with a 9-1 win over St. George's A, and could yet snatch 3rd or 4th position with a win in the final week.
So, in the final round of matches, with Flamstead A effectively assured of top spot, Adeyfield B, Adeyfield C and Crown & Sceptre B, who all have the exact same record of 12 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses, are all still in with some chance of going up. For Adeyfield B, they need at least a draw against Adeyfield C, whilst the C team need a 6-4 win, or better, and are on a run of 8 consecutive wins, including a 6-4 win over their B team, last time out! Crown & Sceptre would need at least an 8-2 win over McAlpine, and hope that neither Adeyfield team produces a *conclusive victory*, in order to sneak above them both.
What a season!!
