Match Report

With Ronnie arriving late, the order of play was identical to the NatWest match and also the fact that we had to again concede the doubles because we ran out of time despite starting at 18:25 and playing the last two singles’ games on separate tables.
I remember looking at the clock and the time was 20:44 and we were still in the sixth game. We were the first to start and the last to finish.

In the opening match I played Toan and his game is literally hit and miss, the misses obviously coming in the second set which I won surprisingly comfortably.

Next up, George against Duncan. Duncan raced into two sets and 5-0 lead. George came back to be within a whisker of snatching the third set at 11-10, but sadly it wasn’t to be.
This was one of only two matches that finished three straight. The other was my win over Chris.

In a titanic match, George lost the first set to Toan and Toan led the second 10-6. George scraped that won and led 8-1 in the third.
Unbelievably, Toan came back to level at 8-8 only to lose 12-10. With the match score at 2 sets all George led 9-7 in the final set.
The writing appeared to be on the wall for George as Toan levelled, first with a net and then with an edge. George came through 12-10 to record his first win, ironically also against Morpeth, since November 2019.

With the match score at 2-2, enter Ronnie and his first match against Duncan. After losing the opening set Ronnie came through 3-1. He also beat Chris 3-1 in his final match of the night.
Ronnie’s middle match was against Toan and Toan quickly raced into a 2-0 lead. After 4 comfortable sets either way you wondered how the final set was going to go. Incredibly close, it finished 14-12 to Ronnie to complete his hat-trick on the night.

The final match of the evening saw me pitched against Duncan. Another titanic battle ensued with Duncan the victor at 11-9 in the final set. That match finished at 21:35 so there was no time to play the doubles.

With the four 5 setter matches being evenly contested, and despite conceding the doubles, a draw seemed a very fair result.
